What is an embedded quality assurance engineer?

Embedded Quality Assurance Engineers are professionals who ensure the quality and functionality of embedded systems—specialized computing systems that are part of larger devices, such as automotive controls, medical devices, or consumer electronics. Their job involves designing and executing tests to find software and hardware defects, verifying compliance with standards, and collaborating closely with developers during the product lifecycle. They use specialized tools to simulate real-world usage and often work with both hardware and software components to ensure reliable performance. Their efforts help prevent costly recalls and ensure user safety and satisfaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded quality assurance engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Quality Assurance Engineer, you need a solid understanding of embedded systems, software testing methodologies, and proficiency in programming languages like C or C++. Familiarity with automated testing frameworks, debugging tools, hardware simulators, and certifications such as ISTQB are often required. Excellent analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help ensure thorough testing and collaboration with development teams. These competencies are vital for delivering reliable embedded products and detecting critical issues early in the development cycle.

What are the most common challenges faced by embedded quality assurance engineers during the testing process?

Embedded Quality Assurance Engineers often encounter challenges such as limited access to hardware, difficulty in reproducing bugs due to real-time constraints, and the need to work with diverse development tools and platforms. Testing embedded systems typically requires specialized equipment and a deep understanding of both software and hardware interactions. Collaborating closely with firmware developers and hardware engineers is essential to diagnose issues efficiently and ensure thorough coverage, especially given the resource constraints that embedded devices often present.

What is the difference between Embedded Quality Assurance Engineer vs Software Quality Assurance Engineer?

QA Engineer - Refrigeration & HVAC Controls

Job Summary

We're looking for a QA Engineer who can do more than execute test cases. This role sits at the intersection of software, controls, and field application, so it requires someone comfortable validating systems end-to-end-not just checking boxes.

You'll be responsible for testing controller applications, supporting field issues, and contributing to documentation that ensures products are deployed correctly in real-world environments.

Why This Role Matters

This role directly impacts product quality, field reliability, and customer satisfaction. The QA Engineer will help ensure that what is designed in development works in the field-under real conditions, with real constraints.

Key Responsibilities

  • QA Testing & Validation
  • Perform functional and system-level QA testing of:
  • Refrigeration Case Controllers
  • CO2 High Pressure Valve controllers
  • HVAC Zone control applications:
  • Validate control logic, alarms, fail-safes, and system interactions
  • Develop, execute, and maintain test plans, test cases, and test reports
  • Perform regression and integration testing across firmware and application updates
  • Identify defects, document root cause observations, and work closely with engineering for resolution
  • Field & Product Support
  • Participate in field support calls to troubleshoot real-world issues
  • Analyze logs, system behavior, and configurations to diagnose problems Provide feedback to development teams based on field learnings
  • Support beta deployments, including validation, feedback collection, and issue tracking
  • Documentation & Controls Understanding
  • Read, interpret, and validate:
  • Control schematics
  • Wiring diagrams
  • o Sequences of Operation (SOPs)
  • o Methods of Procedure (MOPs)
  • Contribute to or review technical documentation to ensure alignment with product behavior
  • Help bridge gaps between documentation, implementation, and field expectations
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with development, product management, and field teams
  • Participate in test planning, design reviews, and release readiness discussions Provide practical input on usability, reliability, and deployment risks

Required Qualifications

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Controls, or related field) or equivalent experience
  • 2-5 years of experience in QA, testing, or field support (HVAC/Refrigeration preferred)
  • Strong understanding of testing methodologies and defect tracking
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
  • Hands-on experience with embedded systems or controller-based products
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and handle ambiguity in real-world scenarios

Nice-to-Have

  • Basic knowledge of Controls Engineering (PID loops, sensors, actuators, control logic)
  • Familiarity with CO2 refrigeration systems or HVAC applications
  • Experience with tools such as:
    • Modbus/BACnet communication tools
    • Logging/diagnostic tools
    • Test automation frameworks (where applicable)
  • Experience supporting field deployments or working directly with customers

Key Traits for Success

  • Handle multiple tasks in parallel
  • Not just task-oriented but thinks critically about system behavior
  • Comfortable moving between lab testing and real-world field issues
  • Strong attention to detail without losing sight of system-level impact
  • Willingness to dig deeper than symptoms and understand root causes
  • Clear communicator across engineering and non-engineering teams
