THIS IS AN ONSITE POSITION
Summary:
Parabit Systems, Inc., a leading innovator in security and self-service solutions, is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Firmware Engineer - Embedded Systems Designer to participate in all phases of firmware and embedded systems design, development, integration, and maintenance for our product lines.
The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in embedded systems architecture, microcontroller programming, hands-on electronics troubleshooting, and hardware, firmware, and software interoperability. This is not a firmware-only role. The successful candidate must be comfortable reading schematics, reviewing PCB layouts, supporting board bring-up, and diagnosing issues across components, circuits, firmware, and system interfaces.
You will be involved in the complete product lifecycle, from conceptual design and prototyping to release-to-manufacturing, field deployment, and product support. Candidates should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and the discipline to move between firmware development, lab-bench debugging, manufacturing support, and field issue resolution without compromising quality.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain firmware for access control, monitoring, and self-service equipment, ensuring reliable integration with enterprise-level management software and cloud-based platforms.
- Contribute to system architecture, hardware interface design, MCU peripheral usage, I/O definition, pin mapping, embedded application development, and design decisions affecting firmware and electronics integration.
- Review schematics, PCB layouts, BOMs, component datasheets, and electrical specifications to identify design concerns, firmware interface requirements, and reliability risks before release.
- Support prototype and production board bring-up, including power checks, bootloader and programming validation, signal verification, interface validation, and troubleshooting of digital and mixed-signal circuits.
- Diagnose and resolve root causes of hardware, firmware, and system-level issues involving components, circuits, communication buses, timing, power, noise, configuration, and environmental factors.
- Use oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, benchtop power supplies, programmers, debuggers, and related lab equipment to validate hardware behavior and support firmware debugging.
- Implement secure coding practices and ensure compliance with relevant cybersecurity and industry standards, including NIST, FIPS, and ISO where applicable.
- Develop and maintain communication protocols for embedded systems, including TCP/IP, UDP, SPI, IยฒC, UART, RS-232/485, USB, Ethernet, and Bluetooth.
- Perform system-level testing, validation, regression testing, and debugging using development tools, emulators, hardware test fixtures, and simulation environments.
- Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including design specifications, schematic and interface notes, test procedures, validation records, release notes, and troubleshooting guidance.
- Enhance existing products with new features, security updates, hardware compatibility improvements, reliability updates, and performance optimizations.
- Collaborate with hardware engineers, software developers, QA engineers, manufacturing, service, and field teams to ensure product reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, and successful deployment.
- Provide customer-facing technical support both remotely and on-site as needed.
- Coordinate internal build activities, prototype readiness, firmware loading, hardware test support, and engineering project workflow.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum 10 years of embedded systems design and development experience, including significant hands-on work with firmware and physical electronics.
- Strong hands-on hardware experience, including schematic review or design, PCB layout exposure, board bring-up, circuit and component troubleshooting, and hardware validation.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, PCB layouts, BOMs, datasheets, timing diagrams, communication interface specifications, and electrical test results.
- Experience using electrical test and debug equipment, including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, benchtop power supplies, programmers, debuggers, and related lab tools.
- Practical experience debugging MCU peripherals and hardware interfaces such as GPIO, ADC, DAC, timers, PWM, SPI, IยฒC, UART, RS-232/485, USB, Ethernet, and Bluetooth.
- Proficiency with Microchip PIC family hardware, MPLAB IDE/IPE, and compilers; experience with other MCU platforms and RTOS environments is a plus.
- Strong programming skills in C for embedded systems; experience with C#, VB, and .NET for engineering tools and UI development preferred.
- SQL database experience for configuration, logging, diagnostics, or device management integration is desirable.
- Advanced understanding of network communication protocols and embedded communication standards.
- Expertise in state machine design and implementation.
- Experience integrating embedded systems with cloud services, IoT frameworks, or remote management platforms preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to document, test, and validate complex designs to ensure performance, security, reliability, serviceability, and maintainability.
- Strong multitasking capabilities with a proven record of delivering projects on time.
