Job description

Embedded Firmware Engineer

Summary

You will contribute to the embedded software and firmware that power PIXCEL's photonic and imaging systems. You will work across embedded Linux, firmware, system bring-up, drivers, and high-performance data processing, helping develop reliable software for advanced hardware platforms. You will work closely with FPGA, hardware, and systems engineers to bring new platforms from development through production. The role involves low-level development and debugging across the hardware/software boundary, as well as documenting software and development processes to the standards required in a regulated medical-device environment.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, maintain, and debug embedded software and firmware for ARM-based and other embedded platforms.
  • Work with embedded Linux systems, including BSPs, boot processes, system configuration, and board support.
  • Develop and maintain device drivers and interfaces for custom hardware and programmable-logic peripherals.
  • Develop and support high-performance data processing and communications pathways, including networking and high-rate data transfer.
  • Evaluate and prototype firmware and embedded software architectures for demanding, data-intensive applications.
  • Support embedded Linux build systems and toolchains, including Yocto or similar technologies.
  • Debug issues across hardware and software using tools such as JTAG, serial consoles, system logs, and low-level register access.
  • Collaborate with FPGA and hardware engineers on system architecture, hardware interfaces, memory and peripheral configuration, and board bring-up.
  • Support the development and integration of embedded software for new production hardware.
  • Document software architecture, build processes, interfaces, debugging procedures, and other development activities to an appropriate standard for a regulated environment.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of hands-on embedded software or firmware development experience.
  • Strong experience developing software for ARM-based SoCs or similar embedded computing platforms.
  • Experience with embedded Linux and/or real-time or bare-metal development environments.
  • Experience with embedded boot processes, BSP development, or low-level system configuration.
  • Experience developing and debugging device drivers or software interfaces for hardware peripherals.
  • Strong proficiency in C/C++ for embedded software development.
  • Experience with Python or similar scripting languages for automation, testing, or development tooling.
  • Comfortable with low-level system debugging and troubleshooting across hardware and software.
  • Experience working with high-performance embedded systems, networking, imaging, data acquisition, or other data-intensive applications.
  • Ability to read schematics and datasheets and collaborate effectively with hardware and FPGA engineers.
  • Experience with electronic test and debugging equipment is desirable.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Zynq, FPGA-based systems, or other heterogeneous SoC platforms.
  • Experience with Yocto, PetaLinux, or similar embedded Linux build environments.
  • Experience developing Linux kernel drivers.
  • Experience with real-time data streaming, networking, imaging, or other high-throughput applications.
  • Experience with automated testing and build systems.
  • Experience working in a regulated, safety-critical, or medical-device environment.
