What is an embedded flight software engineer?

Embedded Flight Software Engineers design, develop, test, and maintain software that runs on embedded computer systems within aircraft, spacecraft, or satellites. They work closely with hardware engineers to ensure that the software interfaces correctly with sensors, actuators, and control systems used for flight operations. Their responsibilities often include programming in languages like C or C++, debugging real-time systems, and ensuring compliance with safety and reliability standards. This role is critical in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of aerospace vehicles.

What are some common challenges embedded flight software engineers face when working on spacecraft projects?

Embedded Flight Software Engineers often work under strict reliability and safety requirements, which means testing and validation are critical and highly rigorous. They frequently collaborate with hardware engineers to ensure software and hardware integration is seamless, and must manage constraints such as limited processing power and memory. Additionally, they need to adapt to changing project requirements and tight deadlines, all while staying up-to-date with evolving aerospace standards and technologies. These challenges make strong problem-solving skills and effective communication essential in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded flight software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Flight Software Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science or engineering, proficiency in C/C++ programming, and experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) and embedded systems. Familiarity with aerospace standards, software development tools (such as Git, Jenkins), and certifications like DO-178C for software safety are typically required. Exceptional problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure reliable, safe, and efficient software for mission-critical aerospace applications.

What is the difference between Embedded Flight Software Engineer vs Embedded Systems Engineer?

Job description

At Zepto Life Technology, Inc. (Zepto), we are dedicated to revolutionizing healthcare through the development of innovative point-of-care molecular diagnostics. Our cutting-edge platform leverages giant magnetoresistance (GMR) technology as a sensitive and scalable detection method to improve the accuracy, speed, and accessibility of disease diagnosis. By integrating breakthroughs in biotech, assay development, engineering, and software, Zepto is shaping the future of molecular diagnostics in diverse settings and empowering more accessible, efficient healthcare innovation.

Summary

Zepto Life Technology is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Embedded Software Engineer to lead the design, development, and lifecycle management of embedded firmware for our next-generation molecular diagnostic instrumentation.

This individual will serve as the technical owner of the instrument's embedded software platform, developing firmware that controls hardware operation, acquires and processes data, manages instrument workflows, and enables communication between the electronics and higher-level software applications. The ideal candidate has extensive experience developing embedded systems for complex instruments and enjoys collaborating closely with electrical, software, assay, and systems engineers to bring innovative medical devices from concept through commercialization.

Essential Duties

Work under general direction while collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop and commercialize Zepto's molecular diagnostic instrumentation, including but not limited to:

  • Serve as the technical owner of the embedded software and firmware architecture for Zepto's GMR diagnostic platform.
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain embedded firmware supporting instrument operation and control.
  • Develop low-level device drivers and hardware abstraction layers (HAL) for sensors, processors, peripherals, and communication interfaces.
  • Design firmware architecture that is scalable, maintainable, and compliant with medical device software development practices.
  • Define and implement instrument workflows, operational sequences, state machines, and timing logic.
  • Develop firmware supporting system startup, initialization, calibration, diagnostics, assay execution, error handling, and shutdown.
  • Design and optimize data acquisition, data buffering, data validation, and communication between embedded firmware and application software.
  • Collaborate with software engineering teams to define APIs, communication protocols, command structures, and software interfaces.
  • Collaborate closely with the Senior Electrical Systems Engineer during hardware bring-up, board validation, and system integration.
  • Implement firmware supporting GMR sensor data acquisition and signal processing algorithms.
  • Troubleshoot embedded software, firmware, and hardware integration issues using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, debuggers, and other engineering tools.
