What is the difference between Embedded Engineer vs Firmware Engineer?

AspectEmbedded EngineerFirmware Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical, Computer Engineering, or related fields; certifications like ARM or IoT certifications are commonBachelor's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related; often similar certifications in embedded systems or firmware development
Work EnvironmentDesigning and developing hardware-software integrated systems, often in industrial, automotive, or consumer electronicsWriting, testing, and debugging low-level code that runs directly on hardware devices like microcontrollers or embedded processors
Employer & Industry UsageElectronics manufacturers, automotive, aerospace, IoT companiesConsumer electronics, IoT devices, medical devices, automotive systems

Embedded Engineers and Firmware Engineers often work closely, but Embedded Engineers focus on both hardware and software integration, while Firmware Engineers specialize in low-level code development that runs directly on hardware. Both roles require similar skills and certifications, but their primary focus and work environment differ slightly.

What does an embedded engineer do?

An embedded engineer designs, develops, and tests software and hardware for embedded systems, which are specialized computing devices within larger systems such as appliances, vehicles, or industrial machines. They work with microcontrollers, real-time operating systems, and programming languages like C or C++, often collaborating with hardware engineers to ensure system functionality and reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Embedded Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science or electrical engineering, with strong skills in C/C++, microcontroller programming, and embedded systems design. Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS), hardware debugging tools, and version control systems like Git is typically required, and certifications such as Certified Embedded Systems Engineer (CESE) can be beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this field. These competencies are crucial for developing reliable, efficient embedded solutions that integrate seamlessly with hardware and meet user requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by Embedded Engineers when working on cross-functional teams?

Embedded Engineers often collaborate closely with hardware designers, software developers, and test engineers, which can present challenges related to communication and integration. Aligning the firmware with hardware specifications, managing resource constraints, and ensuring timely debugging across different platforms are frequent hurdles. To succeed, Embedded Engineers need strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset to bridge gaps between disciplines and deliver cohesive, reliable systems.

Will an embedded engineer be replaced by AI?

Embedded engineers design and develop software and hardware for embedded systems, and while AI can automate certain tasks like testing and data analysis, it is unlikely to fully replace the need for human engineers who require specialized knowledge of hardware, real-time constraints, and system integration. AI tools can augment their work but do not currently replace the critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential to the role.

Job description

DevOps Working Manager – Embedded Systems

Up to $165,000 Base Salary • Greater Milwaukee Area • Hybrid (3 Days Onsite / 2 Days Remote) • Full Benefits

  • LEADERSHIP: Working manager role (Split: 60-70% hands-on architecture, 30-40% team mentorship & daily standups)
  • TECH STACK: Deep low-level build systems, Embedded Linux infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, Containerization, and IaC
  • EXPERIENCE: 5+ years of software engineering centered in DevOps, SRE, or complex build engineering
  • WORK SCHEDULE: Balanced Hybrid layout | 3 Days Onsite, 2 Days Remote out of the Milwaukee, WI facility
  • CITIZENSHIP: US Citizen or Green Card holder required (no corporate visa sponsorship available)

If you are an elite platform or build engineer looking to transition into formal leadership without sacrificing your technical edge or getting buried in corporate bureaucracy, this direct-hire, hybrid track offers the perfect equilibrium. This high-growth, financially stable organization is a global pioneer in industrial machine software and AI automation. Unlike traditional, slow-moving corporate environments where managers only sit in meetings, this fast-paced engineering culture expects its leaders to stay technical, review code, and architect real solutions side-by-side with their team.

The organization completely rejects rigid corporate tenure metrics, choosing instead to map out aggressive, performance-driven advancement tracks. As a working team lead for a highly specialized, tight-knit platform division, your time will be split between hands-on engineering execution and mentoring an exceptional crew of infrastructure developers. Backed by incredible stability, top-tier health and retirement benefits, and an innovation-first culture, this is a premium space to take a high-impact architectural seat while building a decades-long career.

What You Will Be Doing (Daily Responsibilities)
  • Provide active technical leadership as a working team lead, jumping into the codebase, managing complex automated build architectures, and troubleshooting low-level systems.
  • Drive team mentorship and management by directing daily standups, providing technical coaching, and utilizing clear career-mapping tools to scale a specialized DevOps team.
  • Optimize next-generation automation strategies for global software delivery, container deployment mechanics, and customized Infrastructure as Code script frameworks.
  • Execute data-driven system tuning by analyzing real-time build performance metrics and automated testing logs to eliminate infrastructure bottlenecks and optimize compiler efficiency.
  • Serve as the direct cross-functional liaison between embedded software divisions, quality assurance, and executive leadership to maintain a highly reliable, secure production stack.
What We Are Looking For (Requirements & Qualifications)
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in DevOps, Build Engineering, or SRE roles with a rock-solid, verifiable software engineering foundation.
  • Verifiable, hands-on experience navigating low-level build environments, specifically Embedded Linux infrastructure.
  • Advanced, practical capability architecting CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
  • A working-manager mindset with a strong desire to lead from the front, focusing heavily on peer code reviews, active technical mentorship, and tactical project delegation rather than hands-off administration.
  • A stable, progressive work history showing reliability, strong team collaboration, and long-term commitment to past employers.
  • Proximity to the facility, with the requirement to reside within a dependable 45-minute daily driving radius of the Greater Milwaukee, WI area to support the hybrid onsite schedule.
