How much do embedded engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 20, 2026, the average yearly pay for embedded engineer in Nevada is $156,191.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $133,900.00 and $176,200.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded engineer?

To thrive as an Embedded Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science or electrical engineering, with strong skills in C/C++, microcontroller programming, and embedded systems design. Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS), hardware debugging tools, and version control systems like Git is typically required, and certifications such as Certified Embedded Systems Engineer (CESE) can be beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this field. These competencies are crucial for developing reliable, efficient embedded solutions that integrate seamlessly with hardware and meet user requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by embedded engineers when working on cross-functional teams?

Embedded Engineers often collaborate closely with hardware designers, software developers, and test engineers, which can present challenges related to communication and integration. Aligning the firmware with hardware specifications, managing resource constraints, and ensuring timely debugging across different platforms are frequent hurdles. To succeed, Embedded Engineers need strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset to bridge gaps between disciplines and deliver cohesive, reliable systems.

What is the difference between Embedded Engineer vs Firmware Engineer?

AspectEmbedded EngineerFirmware Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical, Computer Engineering, or related fields; certifications like ARM or IoT certifications are commonBachelor's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related; often similar certifications in embedded systems or firmware development
Work EnvironmentDesigning and developing hardware-software integrated systems, often in industrial, automotive, or consumer electronicsWriting, testing, and debugging low-level code that runs directly on hardware devices like microcontrollers or embedded processors
Employer & Industry UsageElectronics manufacturers, automotive, aerospace, IoT companiesConsumer electronics, IoT devices, medical devices, automotive systems

Embedded Engineers and Firmware Engineers often work closely, but Embedded Engineers focus on both hardware and software integration, while Firmware Engineers specialize in low-level code development that runs directly on hardware. Both roles require similar skills and certifications, but their primary focus and work environment differ slightly.

Are embedded engineers in demand?

Embedded engineers are in high demand due to the growth of IoT devices, automotive systems, and consumer electronics. Skills in C/C++, real-time operating systems, and hardware integration are particularly valuable in this field, which offers strong job stability and opportunities across various industries.

What does an embedded engineer do?

An embedded engineer designs, develops, and tests software and hardware for embedded systems, which are specialized computing devices within larger machines or products. They work with microcontrollers, real-time operating systems, and programming languages like C or C++, often collaborating with hardware teams to ensure system functionality and reliability.

Senior Electronics Design Engineer

Generac Power Systems, Inc.

Reno, NV • On-site

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Retirement, PTO

Job description

We believe power is a promise - a shared commitment to be there for others when it matters most.
For more than 65 years, we've turned big ideas into solutions that help protect homes, strengthen businesses and build a more resilient, efficient, sustainable energy future.
Ready to Power a Smarter World with us?
Generac Home is hiring for a Senior Electronics Design Engineer. In this role as part of the Home Interconnects & Interconnect Controls team you will be responsible for interconnecting sources and loads across Generac's product portfolio. We own controls and hardware that tie generators, energy storage, transfer switches, load-management devices, and metering together into a coordinated home energy system.
As a Senior Electronics Design Engineer, you will own and drive the board architecture for our interconnect products - from power-conversion, metering, and control architecture through verification and production. This is an ownership role, not a pure execution one: you will set technical direction, make the architecture and component-selection decisions, and partner closely with firmware, mechanical, manufacturing, and test engineering to bring robust, cost-effective products to market.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Own and design and validate analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuits for power conversion, power management, embedded control, communications, sensor interfaces, and precision AC voltage, current, and power measurement, including revenue-grade metering and calibration.
  • Perform schematic capture, component selection, simulation, PCB design reviews, and hardware debugging.
  • Apply functional safety and safety-critical design principles throughout, including DFMEA and compliance with standards such as UL 991.
  • Drive Design for Excellence (DFx) - Manufacturability, test, reliability, and cost.
  • Support manufacturing and production at scale - resolving production issues and root-causing hardware failures across development, validation, manufacturing, and the field.
  • Work with suppliers to evaluate components and resolve technical issues.
  • Collaborate with firmware, mechanical, manufacturing, quality, and test engineering to deliver robust, cost-effective products.
  • Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership through design reviews, design standards, and architecture decisions.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in mixed-signal electronic hardware design & product development.
  • Experience designing products through full product development cycles and into production.
  • Hands-on experience with power-conversion design (AC-DC and/or DC-DC) and microcontroller-based embedded control systems.
  • Demonstrated experience owning and driving board-level architecture - defining partitioning, interfaces, and design tradeoffs - not solely executing schematic and layout to a given spec.
  • Knowledge of AC voltage, current, and power measurement, including revenue-grade metering and the associated accuracy and calibration considerations.
  • Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout review
  • Experience debugging complex electronic systems using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other laboratory equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 7+ years of experience developing electronic products for high volume manufacturing.
  • Experience with a range of communication protocols (CAN, UART, SPI, I²C, Ethernet, USB) and related hardware.
  • Experience with hardware validation, reliability testing, and regulatory compliance.
  • Familiarity with simulation tools for analog, power, and signal integrity analysis.
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Test (DFT), Design for Reliability (DFR), and Design for Cost (DFC).
  • Familiarity with automated test development and fault injection techniques.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively on cross functional teams.
  • Experience with renewable energy, battery systems, power electronics, or RF design is strongly preferred, given the residential energy focus of our products.

This position includes a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans; life, long-term disability, flexible, spending and health savings accounts, accrued paid time off, eight paid holidays, 2 floating holidays and 401(k) retirement benefits.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; and use hands to manipulate objects or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. On occasion, the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend, or reach above the shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific conditions of this job are typical of frequent and continuous computer-based work requiring periods of sitting, close vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
