What is an embedded electronic engineer?

Embedded Electronic Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain embedded systems, which are specialized computing systems that perform dedicated functions within larger electrical or mechanical systems. These engineers work with both hardware and software, integrating microcontrollers, sensors, and other electronic components to create devices like medical equipment, automotive systems, industrial machines, and consumer electronics. Their work involves circuit design, programming, testing, and troubleshooting to ensure the reliability and efficiency of embedded systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded electronic engineer?

To thrive as an Embedded Electronic Engineer, you need strong proficiency in electronics design, embedded systems programming (often in C/C++), and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with microcontroller/microprocessor platforms, debugging tools like oscilloscopes and logic analyzers, and industry certifications such as IPC or ARM accreditation are commonly required. Problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork significantly enhance performance in this role. These competencies ensure reliable product development, efficient troubleshooting, and successful integration of hardware and software systems.

What are some common challenges an embedded electronic engineer may face when working on interdisciplinary teams?

Embedded Electronic Engineers often collaborate with software developers, mechanical engineers, and project managers to deliver integrated products. A common challenge is ensuring clear communication across disciplines, as each team may have different technical priorities and terminologies. Balancing hardware constraints with software requirements while maintaining project timelines requires adaptability and proactive problem-solving. Developing a strong understanding of other teams' workflows can help in anticipating integration issues and fostering more effective collaboration.

What is the difference between Embedded Electronic Engineer vs Electronics Design Engineer?

AspectEmbedded Electronic EngineerElectronics Design Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in Electrical/Electronic Engineering; certifications like Certified Embedded Systems EngineerBachelor's or higher in Electrical/Electronic Engineering; similar certifications
Work EnvironmentEmbedded systems development, firmware programming, hardware integrationAnalog/digital circuit design, PCB layout, prototype testing

Job description

Overview

CIS Secure is seeking an Electrical Engineer – Embedded Systems / Flight Control Hardware to join our team supporting the REACT program at Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), Maryland.

The Electrical Engineer will design and develop embedded electronic systems supporting unmanned, autonomous, and other advanced platforms for critical national security missions. This role works across circuit design, embedded computing, flight control hardware, sensors, and imaging systems to rapidly prototype and mature integrated hardware capabilities.

This position provides an opportunity to work hands-on with advanced embedded technologies while supporting the development and integration of mission-critical systems in a collaborative engineering environment.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide hands-on engineering support across the system development lifecycle, from system architecture and component selection through schematic design, PCB development, firmware integration, board bring-up, and system testing.
  • Work closely with software, mechanical, autonomy, and systems engineers to integrate flight controllers, processors, sensors, cameras, communications hardware, and other embedded components into complete platforms.
  • Support the rapid prototyping, integration, troubleshooting, and maturation of embedded electronic systems for operational and test environments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications REQUIRED SKILLS:
  • Experience designing and developing embedded electronic systems, including schematic design, component selection, PCB development, and hardware bring-up.
  • Experience with microcontrollers, embedded processors, or SoCs and associated peripheral circuitry.
  • Experience developing or integrating flight control hardware, avionics, robotics, or other real-time embedded systems.
  • Working knowledge of embedded interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, USB, Ethernet, or similar.
  • Experience developing, modifying, or debugging embedded firmware in C/C++ or similar languages.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting hardware and firmware using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, and other laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to integrate sensors, communications devices, and other peripherals into embedded platforms.
DESIRED SKILLS:
  • Experience developing hardware for UAS, robotics, autonomous systems, or aerospace platforms.
  • Experience with flight controllers, IMUs, GNSS receivers, ESCs, servos, motor control, or related avionics.
  • Experience integrating cameras, image sensors, video processing hardware, or electro-optical systems.
  • Familiarity with camera interfaces such as MIPI CSI, USB, Ethernet, or similar high-speed interfaces.
  • Experience with embedded Linux, RTOS environments, or bare-metal firmware development.
  • Familiarity with STM32, NXP, TI, Microchip, NVIDIA Jetson, Raspberry Pi Compute Module, or similar embedded platforms.
  • Experience with power distribution, battery-powered systems, DC/DC conversion, and power integrity.
  • Experience with PCB layout considerations for mixed-signal, high-speed digital, or compact embedded systems.
  • Familiarity with PX4, ArduPilot, MAVLink, ROS/ROS 2, or similar flight control and robotics ecosystems.
  • Experience rapidly prototyping and integrating custom embedded hardware into operational or test platforms.
