Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer

Location: Harrisonburg, VA

Job Summary

An established, independently owned funeral service provider with multiple locations and an on-site crematory is seeking an experienced Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer to join its team. Serving a growing and diverse community, the organization is recognized for its commitment to professionalism, compassion, and innovative funeral service offerings, including traditional burial, cremation, and natural burial options.

The ideal candidate will be involved in all aspects of funeral service operations, including embalming and preparation, at-need and pre-need arrangements, removals, on-call responsibilities, and other duties as assigned. Supported by modern facilities and an experienced staff, this role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact while serving families during important moments in their lives.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and oversee all funeral arrangements, including planning services, transportation, and preparation of required documentation.

  • Provide compassionate guidance and support to families throughout the funeral planning and service process.

  • Plan and manage funeral services, memorials, and related ceremonies to ensure a seamless experience.

  • Assist with sales and consultation activities related to funeral merchandise and pre-arranged services with professionalism and sensitivity.

  • Perform embalming, preparation, and other mortuary science-related duties as needed.

  • Participate in on-call rotations, removals, and after-hours service requirements.

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable state regulations, OSHA standards, and industry best practices.

  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to funeral services and operations.

Qualifications
  • Current Virginia Funeral Service License or the ability to obtain licensure in Virginia.

  • Previous funeral service experience preferred.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to provide empathetic support during difficult circumstances.

  • Ability to work weekends, participate in a rotating after-hours schedule, and assist with limited on-call transfers.

  • Experience with preneed sales and funeral home management software is a plus.

  • Ability to obtain a Limited Lines Producer License through the Virginia Bureau of Insurance.

  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.

Compensation

Starting at $60,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications.
