What are some common challenges faced by Elixir programmers when working in a team environment?

Elixir programmers often work on distributed, concurrent systems, which can introduce unique challenges in a team setting. Coordinating code that leverages Elixir's concurrency model, such as processes and message passing, requires clear communication and well-defined interfaces to avoid race conditions or unexpected behaviors. Additionally, as Elixir teams may be adopting the language alongside established technologies, integrating Elixir services with other systems and training team members on functional programming concepts can be challenging. However, open collaboration and code reviews help ensure consistent code quality and effective problem-solving.

Common Search/ComparisonElixir Programming vs Ruby Developer

Elixir Programming and Ruby Developer roles share some overlap in web and application development but differ significantly in their core technologies and use cases. Elixir is favored for scalable, concurrent systems, while Ruby is popular for rapid web development. Understanding these differences helps employers and developers choose the right skill set for their projects.

What is Elixir programming?

Elixir programming refers to writing software using Elixir, a dynamic, functional language designed for building scalable and maintainable applications. Elixir runs on the Erlang Virtual Machine (BEAM), which is known for its ability to handle large numbers of concurrent processes and its fault-tolerant features. Elixir is often used for web development, real-time systems, and applications that require high availability. Its syntax is inspired by Ruby, making it approachable for developers familiar with modern programming languages. The language is also popular for use with the Phoenix web framework.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Elixir Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Elixir Programmer, you need solid experience in functional programming, a strong understanding of concurrent systems, and proficiency with the Elixir language, typically supported by a background in software development or computer science. Familiarity with the Phoenix web framework, OTP (Open Telecom Platform), and distributed systems, as well as version control tools like Git, is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and a collaborative mindset help individuals excel in team-based, fast-paced development environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for building scalable, reliable applications and contributing effectively to complex software projects.

Job description

At Podium, we bring AI Employees to local businesses that turn every conversation into revenue. Trusted by 60,000+ businesses across Auto, Home Services, and Aesthetics, Podium captures and converts leads 24/7, driving both new business and repeat customers.
In under 24 months, we crossed $100M in AI Agent ARR, scaling 300% year-over-year. During this time, we've deployed 10,000 AI employees to empower real business outcomes for our customers. Podium is building what we believe will be the most impactful AI employee ecosystem for local business.
Podium has been recognized as the Best AI Implementation by Inc. Magazine, highlighted by OpenAI for building revenue-driving AI Agents, and awarded the #1 AI Agent for Business Operations by G2.
Our growth is fueled by hiring exceptional people, holding them to high standards, and creating opportunities for them to grow and make an impact. Our operating principles guide daily behavior and ensure we hire people who will thrive at Podium. If you're hungry for growth, aligned to our operating principles, and ready to get to work, you won't find a better place to learn and accelerate your career.
About the Role:
We're building the tools that help local businesses connect, grow, and win.
We're looking for a Senior Full Stack Engineer who thinks like a product owner, someone who's scrappy, opinionated, and energized by taking something from zero to one. You care more about what ships than what stack you're shipping on, and you use AI tooling (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) as a genuine force multiplier, not a novelty.
What you will be doing:
You'll own features end-to-end, from the first design conversation to production, on a platform thousands of businesses rely on every day. You'll influence architecture, collaborate closely with product and design, and help keep our systems reliable as we scale. You'll also invest in the people around you: sharing knowledge, reviewing code, and raising the team's collective ceiling.
What you should have:
  • 7+ years building and shipping production systems, full stack.
  • A track record of owning problems end-to-end, not just executing tickets, but defining and delivering.
  • Strong instincts across the stack: you're comfortable going deep on backend logic, database design, and frontend UX in the same sprint.
  • Fluency with relational databases and search fundamentals.
  • A hands-on, daily relationship with AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, etc.) - you've figured out how to move meaningfully faster with them.
  • Ability to work onsite in our Lehi, UT office.

What we hope you have:
  • Experience at a fast-moving startup or SaaS company.
  • Familiarity with distributed systems concepts: queues, event-driven architecture, horizontal scaling.
  • Exposure to our current stack (Elixir/Phoenix, React, PostgreSQL), or genuine curiosity to pick it up fast.
  • A genuine interest in helping teammates grow.

Why you'll love working here:
  • Podium is the best place to work to:
    • Join the leaders in AI agents
    • Unlock career-defining growth
    • Build with world-class talent
    • Make a real impact on local business

Benefits:
  • Open and transparent culture
  • Life insurance, long and short-term disability coverage
  • Paid maternity and paternity leave
  • Fertility Benefits
  • Generous vacation time, plus three 4-day summer holiday weekends
  • Excellent medical, dental, and vision benefits
  • 401k Plan with company matching
  • Bi-annual swag drops with cool Podium gear and apparel
  • A stellar HQ (Utah) gym with local professional coaches and classes offered
  • Onsite HQ (Utah) child care center, subsidized for employees
