Element information

What does a typical day look like for an element analyst in a materials science laboratory?

A typical day for an Element Analyst involves conducting precise chemical analyses to determine the elemental composition of samples using techniques such as spectroscopy or chromatography. You'll spend time preparing samples, calibrating instruments, recording data, and interpreting results. Collaboration with other scientists and lab technicians is common, as you'll often discuss findings and contribute to research projects or quality control processes. Attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols are critical, given the complexity and sensitivity of the analyses performed.

Job Title: Senior Finite Element Software Engineer

General Description

Sinopec Houston Tech has an immediate opening for a Senior Finite Element Software Engineer. This position will be responsible for developing 3D finite element method (FEM) software that fully couples solid mechanics and fluid flow. The software will be used to simulate subsurface stresses and deformations for Earth modeling, geomechanics analysis, in-situ stresses, hydraulic fracturing, and reservoir simulation. The developer will work closely with geoscientists and engineers to create FEM software to support Sinopec’s upstream projects.

Essential Functions
  • Develop innovative finite element software based on the in‑house FEM parallel computing platform.
  • Design and implement models, efficient numerical algorithms, solutions, and software for geomechanics and reservoir modeling in Windows and Linux environments.
  • Collaborate with a GUI developer to create pre‑ and post‑processing codes, mesh generation tools, and graphical user interfaces for the FEM software.
  • Design, develop, and maintain software while assisting in testing activities.
  • Contribute to project quality and maintain source code integrity.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive software documentation.
  • Share expertise throughout the team.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong programming skills in Fortran, Python, or other coding languages.
  • Expert level knowledge of numerical methods and coding (e.g., FEM, FDM).
  • Proven experience in parallel and high‑performance computing.
  • Experience coding in Linux and Windows environments.
  • Organized, detail‑oriented, with strong analytical, numerical, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Experience in programming 3D visualizations is a plus.
  • Software development experience in numerical analysis, hydraulic fracturing, reservoir simulation, geoscience, or geomechanics is preferred.
  • Self‑starter with strong multitasking abilities.
  • High integrity and self‑discipline to meet objectives on time.
  • Team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential company IP.
Minimum Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mechanics, or a related technical field (e.g., geomechanics, geology, reservoir simulation). The degree should involve coding.
  • 5+ years of experience as a Software Engineer/Developer in FEM software programming and modeling.
  • Some domestic and international travel may be required (normally <10%).
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States.
