Job Description Summary:
The Network Infrastructure Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and documentation of low voltage systems that support clinical and administrative operations within a healthcare environment. This role operates in a highly regulated environment where system reliability directly impacts patient care, safety, and compliance. The technician must adhere to healthcare standards, infection control protocols, and applicable codes while ensuring minimal disruption to hospital operations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Install, terminate, label, and test low voltage cabling (Cat6/6A, fiber optic) in accordance with industry standards (e.g., TIA/EIA, BICSI).
  • Perform troubleshooting and repair of structured cabling, network drops, and low voltage devices.
  • Conduct cable certification testing using industry-standard tools (e.g., Fluke testers) and maintain accurate test results.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, floor plans, riser diagrams, and technical schematics.
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, including HIPAA considerations where applicable (e.g., device placement, data pathways).
  • Follow infection prevention protocols (e.g., ICRA procedures, ceiling tile management, containment barriers).
  • Coordinate with IT, facilities, clinical engineering, and third-party vendors during installations and maintenance activities.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including cable plant records, labeling schemes, and as-built diagrams.
  • Respond to service tickets and emergency calls in a timely manner, including after-hours support if required.
  • Adhere to all OSHA safety requirements and facility-specific safety policies.
  • Other duties which include network closet and datacenter maintenance, cable dressing in closets and APS UPS replacements, and general cable management in network closets
  • Assist in providing estimates for projects

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate degree in electronics, telecommunications, information technology, or related field preferred.

LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:
  • Low Voltage/ Limited Energy License (as required by state/local jurisdiction)
  • Preferred: BICSI Technician (TECH) or Installer (INST1/INSTC)
  • Preferred: Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT)
  • Preferred: OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification

EXPERIENCE:
  • 2-5+ years of hands-on experience with low voltage systems installation and support
  • Experience in healthcare environments strongly preferred (hospital, clinic, or medical campus)
  • Proven experience with: Structured cabling systems (copper and fiber), Network infrastructure support
  • Experience working in active/occupied environments with minimal disruption

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Technical knowledge including strong understanding of structured cabling standards (TIA/EIA, ANSI), familiarity with healthcare systems such as nurse call, RTLS, and clinical communication platforms.
  • Working knowledge of IP networking fundamentals (VLANs, PoE, switches, patch panels)
  • Understanding of low voltage electrical principles and signal integrity.
  • Proficient in cable termination (RJ45, fiber splicing/termination preferred)
  • Skilled in cable testing and certification tools
  • Ability to troubleshoot connectivity and hardware issues efficiently
  • Competence in using hand tools, power tools, and testing equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documentation and construction drawings
  • Strong attention to detail, particularly in labeling and documentation
  • Ability to work in sensitive environments (patient care areas) with professionalism and discretion
  • Capable of lifting equipment (typically up to 50 lbs), climbing ladders, and working in ceilings or confined spaces
  • Effective communication skills for coordinating with clinical staff, IT teams, and vendors
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple service requests in a fast-paced environment
