Electronic Rework Technician information

What is an electronic rework technician?

Electronic Rework Technicians are specialized professionals who repair, modify, or rework electronic assemblies and circuit boards. They use tools like soldering irons, microscopes, and precision instruments to remove, replace, or fix faulty components on printed circuit boards (PCBs) or other electronic equipment. Their work is essential in manufacturing, quality control, and after-sales service to ensure products meet required standards and function properly. These technicians often follow strict industry guidelines and may also perform diagnostic tests to identify issues before performing repairs.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an electronic rework technician?

To thrive as an Electronic Rework Technician, you need a solid understanding of electronics, soldering techniques, and component-level troubleshooting, typically gained through technical training or an associate’s degree in electronics. Familiarity with tools such as soldering irons, multimeters, oscilloscopes, and rework/reflow stations, as well as IPC certification (like IPC-7711/7721), is often required. Attention to detail, manual dexterity, and effective communication are soft skills that set top performers apart. These skills ensure precise repairs, minimize errors, and maintain high standards in electronic assembly and refurbishment.

What are common challenges faced by electronic rework technicians, and how can they be addressed?

Electronic Rework Technicians often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex circuit board issues, working with delicate components, and ensuring repairs meet strict quality standards. Staying up-to-date with the latest soldering techniques and industry best practices can help address these challenges. Additionally, collaborating closely with engineering and quality assurance teams ensures that repairs are done correctly and efficiently. Clear documentation and effective communication are also key to maintaining workflow and minimizing errors.

  • Perform rework and repair on PCBAs, including surface-mount device (SMD) and through‑hole soldering and desoldering, in accordance with industry standards.
  • Identify root causes of assembly, solder, or component‑related failures and communicate findings to relevant teams.
  • Support failure analysis activities and provide clear feedback to Manufacturing, Quality, and Engineering to prevent recurrence of issues.
  • Perform visual, functional, and in‑process inspections of electronic assemblies using schematics, bills of materials (BOMs), assembly drawings, and work instructions.

  • Ensure compliance with IPC-A-610, J-STD-001, and specific customer requirements during all assembly, rework, and inspection activities.
  • Support surface-mount technology (SMT), hand assembly, automated optical inspection (AOI), and test operations as needed to meet production goals.
  • Assist with first-article builds, engineering changes, and new production launches by providing technical support and feedback from the manufacturing floor.
  • Identify recurring defects or process issues, escalate concerns appropriately, and contribute to corrective and preventive actions.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and ESD-compliant workstation and follow all established manufacturing and quality procedures.

Optional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience supporting SMT, hand assembly, AOI, and test operations in an electronics manufacturing environment.
  • Familiar in supporting first-article builds, engineering changes, and production launches.
  • Experience participating in failure analysis and contributing to corrective action initiatives.
  • Ability to maintain an organized, ESD-safe workstation and follow established manufacturing best practices.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • At least 2 years of experience as an Electronics Technician, PCBA Technician, or in a similar electronics manufacturing role.
  • Strong hands‑on experience with PCB rework, soldering, and electronics troubleshooting at the component and board level.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, assembly drawings, BOMs, and technical documentation to support troubleshooting and inspection.
  • Familiarity with common electronic components such as resistors, capacitors, integrated circuits (ICs), and connectors.
  • Proficiency in performing visual, functional, and in‑process inspections of electronic assemblies.
  • Ability to follow and apply IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001 standards and customer-specific requirements in daily work.
  • Strong documentation skills for recording repairs, defects, and dispositions in quality and manufacturing systems
