Job description

We are looking for the right people - people who want to innovate, achieve, grow and lead. We attract and retain the best talent by investing in our employees and empowering them to develop themselves and their careers. Experience the challenges, rewards and opportunity of working for one of the world's largest providers of products and services to the global energy industry.

About Sperry Drilling

Sperry Drilling delivers directional drilling, logging-while-drilling (LWD), and measurement-while-drilling (MWD) services that enhance well placement and performance. By combining real-time downhole data with advanced drilling technologies, Sperry enables operators to reduce non-productive time and maximize asset value.

About the Role

Under general supervision, the R&D Electronics Engineer (Senior) serves as a technical lead on development projects supporting next-generation downhole drilling technologies. This role contributes to the design, analysis, validation, and commercialization of advanced electronics systems and subsystems that must operate reliably in harsh downhole environments, including high temperature, shock, vibration, and pressure conditions.

At the Principal level, the role expands to include broader technical leadership, system architecture influence, and mentorship across complex electronics development programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a technical lead on assigned R&D projects, establishing development plans and supporting electronics design reviews.

  • Design, analyze, and validate electronics systems and subsystems for downhole drilling tools and related technologies.

  • Apply engineering tools and simulation software to evaluate performance, reliability, and environmental survivability of electronics assemblies.

  • Identify technical and project risks and contribute to mitigation strategies in collaboration with project and product leads.

  • Develop and execute electronics test specifications and validation plans to support product qualification and commercialization.

  • Ensure Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) requirements are incorporated throughout the design and testing lifecycle.

  • Contribute innovative and commercially viable solutions that expand Halliburton's Intellectual Property portfolio.

  • Collaborate with mechanical, firmware, systems, manufacturing, and field teams to ensure integrated tool performance.

  • Support failure investigations, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Engage with internal technical communities, customers, and suppliers to align electronics designs with operational requirements.

  • Participate in professional societies and technical forums within the area of specialization.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering (electronics focus), or related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum four (4) years of experience in electronics engineering, R&D, or product development.
  • Experience in electronics system design, testing, and performance analysis.
  • Ability to apply engineering standards and HSE principles throughout the development process.

Education & Experience Flexibility

  • Master's degree in Electronics Engineering or related discipline is preferred.
  • Candidates with a PhD in Electronics Engineering or related discipline may be considered in lieu of the minimum years of experience requirement, based on relevant research or technical contributions.

Preferred

  • Experience designing electronics for harsh, high-temperature, high-shock, or vibration-intensive environments.
  • Exposure to downhole, MWD/LWD, or other ruggedized electronics applications.
  • Experience supporting product development, qualification testing, and commercialization of field-deployed systems.

Candidates who exceed minimum qualifications may be considered for higher-level positions based on experience, capability, and business needs. Career progression includes R&D Electronics Engineer Senior to R&D Electronics Engineer Principal.
