Salary Range: $60,000.00 To $80,000.00 Annually

This is a contingent position based on contract award - This position plays a vital role in advancing national wildfire response capabilities at the National Technology and Development Program (NTDP) facility based in Missoula, MT. The selected individual will be responsible for the electronic design, development, and testing of specialized systems and instrumentation. This work is essential for advancing USFS goals, including creating next-generation equipment for the Wildfire Chemical and Air Tanker sections, directly supporting critical national projects in Fire and Aviation.

A sample of duties you will be doing:
  • Assist in the technical design, development, and testing of specialized electronic systems, instrumentation, and control units for wildfire response and related applications.
  • Perform tasks related to electronic circuit design, Printed Circuit Board (PCB) layout, prototyping, and assembly
  • Conduct testing, troubleshooting, and calibration of electronic equipment and systems, ensuring compliance with performance specifications.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including schematics, wiring diagrams, and test procedures.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers and other NTDP team members on integrated system designs.
  • Operate and maintain various electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, and power supplies.
  • Provide support for the integration of electronic components into larger systems and platforms.
  • Support Electronic prototypes, specialized test fixtures, and finished electronic assemblies/modules.
  • Manage Maintenance logs and calibration records for electronic test equipment and laboratory instruments.
  • Inventory evaluations of electronic components, tools, and spare parts.
  • Support Safety inspection reports for the electronics laboratory/work area. These may include electrical safety and ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) protocols.
  • Develop Technical summaries and recommendations for electronic design improvements, new electronic equipment, or system integration.
Education

Associateโ€™s degree in electrical engineering, electronics technology, or a closely related technical field. *Work experience may substitute for the education requirement (see below).

Experience
  • Minimum of five (5) yearsโ€™ experience in electronic design, development, and testing required. *OR a minimum of ten (10) years of experience (substitute for education) working in electronic design, development, and testing required.
  • Proficiency with electronic design software (e.g. CAD for PCBs), test equipment, and knowledge of electronic circuit theory is required.
  • Experience with systems related to communications, sensors, or power management is highly desirable.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Provide strong attention to detail in all design, fabrication, and testing activities.
  • Demonstrate strong writing and oral communication skills for technical documentation and collaboration.
  • Strict adherence to all safety rules and practices within the electronics lab and during field operations
  • Capable of lifting 50lbs and spending extended periods of time standing or walking.
