What is an Electron JS engineer?

Electron JS Engineers are software developers who specialize in building cross-platform desktop applications using the Electron framework. Electron allows developers to use web technologies like JavaScript, HTML, and CSS to create apps that run on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Electron JS Engineers typically work on both the front-end and back-end aspects of these applications, integrating native features and optimizing performance. Their role often includes designing user interfaces, handling communication between the app and the operating system, and ensuring that the application is secure and efficient.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electron JS engineer?

To thrive as an Electron Js Engineer, you need strong proficiency in JavaScript, Node.js, and web technologies like HTML and CSS, along with experience developing cross-platform desktop applications. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, debugging tools, and continuous integration platforms is typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure robust, maintainable applications and smooth collaboration within development teams.

What are some typical challenges faced by Electron JS engineers when building cross-platform desktop applications?

Electron JS Engineers often encounter challenges related to ensuring consistent performance and user experience across Windows, macOS, and Linux. Managing memory usage and application size can be tricky, as Electron apps bundle Chromium and Node.js. Additionally, integrating native system features—like notifications, auto-updates, or hardware access—may require using or developing custom native modules. Close collaboration with UI/UX designers and QA testers is essential to identify and resolve platform-specific bugs quickly.

What is the difference between Electron Js Engineer vs Front-End Developer?

Work EnvironmentDesktop application development, cross-platform appsWeb applications, websites, web interfaces
Industry UsageSoftware companies, startups developing desktop appsWeb development agencies, tech companies, freelance

Electron Js Engineers focus on building cross-platform desktop applications using Electron, combining web technologies with desktop capabilities. Front-End Developers primarily create web interfaces and websites. While both roles require JavaScript skills, Electron Js Engineers specialize in desktop app development, whereas Front-End Developers work on web-based projects.

You'll play a key role in RBC's broader AI strategy by delivering solutions that enhance advisor efficiency and transform how our advisors interact with clients. This is a hands-on engineering role where you'll take innovative audio and AI capabilities from concept through production, working directly with modern web technologies and cloud infrastructure to create resilient, scalable systems that deliver measurable business impact.

What will you do?

  • Code, test, build, deploy, and support multi-tier architecture applications that handle real-time audio processing and transcription at scale
  • Engineer backend services and frontend applications that seamlessly integrate audio streaming, real-time transcription, and generative AI-powered summarization capabilities
  • Collaborate within an agile scrum team to prioritize technical initiatives, balance requirements, and align deliverables with business objectives
  • Leverage modern AI coding tools (Copilot, Windsurf, Claude) throughout the development lifecycle to accelerate productivity and code quality
  • Design systems with resilience, observability, and scalability at their core, implementing robust monitoring and alerting to ensure production reliability

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

  • Post-secondary education in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, or equivalent professional software development experience
  • Proficiency in TypeScript, Node.js, and modern frontend frameworks (React), with hands-on experience building desktop applications using Electron.js
  • Proficiency in audio streaming technologies including WebSocket protocols, real-time data handling, and browser Media APIs (MediaRecorder, Web Audio API, MediaStream)
  • Proven experience with AWS Transcribe Streaming, including WebSocket integration, audio encoding formats (PCM/Opus), and streaming response handling
  • Strong knowledge of authentication patterns including OAuth 2.0/OIDC and secure token management
  • Solid understanding of Electron security best practices including context isolation, preload scripts, Content Security Policy, and secure inter-process communication
  • Experience with backend frameworks (Koa) and testing frameworks (Jest, k6) for building and validating production-grade applications
  • Proficiency in stream processing, including audio buffer management, backpressure handling, and memory optimization
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex multi-tier applications, desktop systems, and WebSocket connections
  • Familiarity with modern development and deployment practices

Nice-to-have

  • Experience with WebEx API/SDK for enhanced communication platform integration
  • Knowledge of audio processing techniques including noise reduction, echo cancellation, and audio normalization
  • Familiarity with Windows audio APIs such as WASAPI for advanced system-level audio capture
  • Experience with Electron packaging, code signing, auto-updates, and installer creation using tools like electron-builder
  • Experience load testing real-time systems using tools like k6 with WebSocket scenarios
  • AWS deployment experience across services including EC2, S3, Lambda, API Gateway, and managed transcription services
  • Backend development experience with Java Spring Boot or similar frameworks
  • Knowledge of monitoring concepts (logs, metrics, traces, telemetry) and observability tools (Dynatrace, Elastic Stack, Prometheus, Grafana)
