Position Summary
The Transformer Field Technician II is a mid-level field service professional responsible for performing transformer assembly, oil processing, maintenance, troubleshooting, testing support, and repair activities in energized and non-energized environments. This role requires increased technical knowledge, greater independence, and the ability to lead portions of field work while assisting in coordinating jobsite activities.
The Technician II serves as a key contributor to field operations, supporting transformer installation, diagnostics, inspections, repairs, and commissioning activities. This role is expected to mentor entry-level technicians while maintaining exceptional safety standards and delivering high-quality work in demanding field environments.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assemble and install transformer components including radiators, bushings, conservators, cooling systems, piping, gauges, and accessories.
  • Perform field reassembly following transformer transportation and delivery.
  • Assist with transformer rigging, positioning, alignment, and installation procedures.
  • Operate oil processing, filtration, dehydration, degassing, and vacuum equipment.
  • Perform transformer dry-out procedures and vacuum filling processes.
  • Troubleshoot moderate electrical and mechanical transformer issues.
  • Perform gasket replacement and fabricate O-rings or gaskets as needed.
  • Support transformer diagnostic testing including insulation resistance, winding resistance, power factor, TTR, SFRA, and oil sampling.
  • Read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, one-line diagrams, and OEM manuals.
  • Complete work orders, inspection reports, and service logs accurately.
  • Assist in mentoring and training Technician I personnel.
  • Follow all safety procedures, PPE requirements, Lockout/Tagout protocols, and environmental standards.

Requirements
Experience & Skill Requirements
  • 2-5 years of experience in transformer field service, oil processing, electrical field work, or industrial maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of transformer components and field servicing practices.
  • Ability to operate oil processing and vacuum equipment.
  • Ability to read technical manuals, drawings, and electrical diagrams.
  • Basic computer proficiency including Microsoft Office and digital reporting platforms.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Experience with Load Tap Changers (LTCs).
  • Familiarity with PowerDB or transformer testing software.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.

Additional Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to travel up to 80% nationwide.
  • Ability to pass DOT physical examination.
  • Background check and pre-employment/random drug testing required.
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds regularly and work in outdoor environments.
