The Position PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION - SIX MONTH PROBATIONARY PERIOD Under general supervision, performs moderately complex electrical service planning duties. Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following: Ensures Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and the highest level of ethical standards. Meets the customer either at the Service counter or at the job site.

Checks for overhead clearances or other utility conflicts. Determines existing service size, reviews architectural plans, load calculations, and electrical diagrams. Conducts field check of the existing vaults, pull boxes, energized pull sections, existing overhead or underground lines.

Determines if the new service should be primary or secondary, underground or overhead. Consults with engineers regarding distribution changes if required. Reviews customer solar and energy storage plans to ensure metering is required.

Conducts a load study of an existing distribution transformer before adding any new services. Determines when to request engineering analysis of the transformer loading. Determines whether the secondary distribution circuit is properly sized to add a new or upgrade service.

Prepares service spot drawings for locations of the electric meter panel for the temporary and permanent services. Collects fees from the customer at the Service counter and signs up the customer for new service. Approves the electric panel drawings prior to permit approval.

Inspects electric panels as needed. Prepares basic engineering plans and drawings for construction. Prepares job packages and service orders, coordinates with construction to insure completeness of the job.

May be required to participate in related divisional cross-training efforts based on operational necessity. Experience and qualifications gained in this cross training may apply towards promotional opportunities and transfers. Drives on city business.

Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe, efficient manner. Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires. When assigned to Inspection duties: Inspects construction of electrical substructure for secondary services.

Inspects customer owned transformer facilities, electrical service equipment and metering equipment. Inspects concrete and asphalt at sites to assure that proportions of aggregates and mixing of batches conform to the specifications. Acts as safety person when contractors require access to energized low voltage (secondary) facilities, i.e., pull boxes, pull sections, vaults etc

Minimum Requirements An equivalent combination of experience and education sufficient to perform the essential job functions and provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Experience Two years of related field or engineering service experience in an electric utility. Education/Training Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Transportation Valid Class C California driver's license. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of: Auto-CAD design and drafting. Distributed Generation and Energy Storage Systems.

Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Interconnection Agreement. EUSERC, NEC, G.O. 128, G.O

95 and Glendale Service Regulations. Metering and test equipment. Overhead/underground construction practices.

Safety rules and regulations. Knowledge of and skill in: Exceptional customer service. Utilizing a variety of Microsoft Office software programs, including Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

Skill in: Effective oral and written communications, both on a one-on-one and group basis. Telephone etiquette. Writing and oral communication skills.

Ability to: Provide exceptional customer service to all employees and vendors. Deal patiently and calmly with irate customers. Develop necessary skills from on-the-job training and meet the standards of performance for the classification by the end of the probationary period.

Effectively interact with the public, including architects, electrical engineers and developers. Effectively handle tense situations when working with the public in the field or at the counter. Foster a teamwork environment.

Interact and coordinate with other City Departments. Model and practice the highest standards of ethical conduct. Read architectural drawings/electrical diagrams.

Train others. Organize workload and customer service request. Read, write, and communicate effectively and comprehend directions in English.

Other Characteristics Willingness to: Advance knowledge via college or trade school electric/electronic, math and physics classes. Assume responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment. Work in close proximity to energized panels.

Work the necessary hours and times to accomplish goals, objectives and required tasks. Work overtime as requested or required. Promotional Eligibility Any City of Glendale employee who meets the minimum qualifications for this position, has completed probation or six months of City employment, and is occupying a permanent full-time classification.

Hourly City employees may be considered, provided that they furnish proof of continuous employment immediately preceding the final filing date, which would equal a minimum of six months of full-time service or 1040 part-time hours.
