Facilities Janitor/Custodian
Emerald Academy (EA) is a free, independently-operated, K-8 college preparatory school. Emerald Academy is Knoxville's first public charter school, and opened its doors in July 2015 to its first class of kindergartners and first graders. At full enrollment, the school will educate approximately 550 scholars.
We are developing in our scholars the skills, habits, and values for them to graduate from high school, enroll in college, and succeed in life. Specifically, we aim to have all of our scholars reading on or above grade level by third grade, to have all of our scholars complete Algebra I in eighth grade, and to have our school rated among the top five percent of Tennessee public schools by our tenth year of operation. The faculty and staff at Emerald Academy are critical to the achievement of these goals, and each member of the staff carries responsibilities that help achieve these goals.
JOB TITLE: Facilities Janitor/Custodian
REPORTS TO: Director of Operations
JOB SUMMARY: The Facilities Custodian manages all daily activities involving the cleanliness of the building
JOB DUTIES:
  • Perform all duties with a minimum of interference with the school program time of learning activities
  • Responsible for all duties assigned by the Operations Manager and Head Custodian
  • Responsible for daily cleaning the dining area
  • Responsible for daily cleaning the restrooms
  • Responsible for the removal of garbage from the building
  • Responsible for thoroughly cleaning garbage cans daily, using disinfectant cleaning solutions
  • Responsible for effective economics of operations by preventing the needless or careless use of supplies, water, electricity, and fuel
  • Responsible for knowing the location of shut-off switches and valves to all utilities
  • Responsible for the reporting and removal of hazards dangerous conditions that may results in the accidents and fire
  • Responsible for adhering to the Custodial Standards Guidelines
  • Must attend all meetings called by the Operations Manager and Head Custodian
  • Must not attempt to repair any major mechanical, structural, electrical, or plumbing repairs, but rather report to the Head Custodian and/or Operations Manager in a timely fashion
  • Must not attempt to discipline students but rather report it to the Operations Manager
  • Perform other duties as they are assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must present oneself in proper appearance when interacting in the public, with students, employees, parents - neat, clean, and properly groomed
  • Must gain the respect of the students, teachers, and other staff members by setting a good example of proper behavior in the work environment
  • Must be able to take direction from supervisor(s) in both written and oral form
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds frequently, 75 pounds occasionally with assistance
