Job description

Job Summary

The Maintenance Department provides construction, installation, relocation, repair, and preventative maintenance on machinery, equipment, and facilities to ensure optimum operating efficiency. The Instrument Electrician performs installation, maintenance, inspection, design, and troubleshooting of electrical and instrument equipment.

Essential Functions

  • Coordinate instrument electrician activities with overall plant operations
  • Install conduit, switchgear, control devices, transformers, electrical feeders, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), humanmachine interface (HMI) devices, and process control equipment
  • Use a personal computer to diagnose and program PLCs and HMIs, as well as to test and calibrate control loops
  • Perform basic troubleshooting for electrical control, distribution, and motor protection and control
  • Use test equipment to diagnose lowvoltage systems (600 volts or less)
  • Test and calibrate process controls
  • Repair pneumatic, mechanical, electrical, and electronic instruments
  • Locate and repair faults on singlephase and polyphase circuits; troubleshoot circuits containing electronic components, printed circuit boards, and PLCbased controllers
  • Connect all types of control circuits, motor circuits, and transformer connections
  • Perform general instrumentation and electrical field maintenance
  • Create asbuilt drawings of completed projects
  • Perform minor welding for brackets and supports of I/E equipment

Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Functions

  • Complete work assignments in accordance with relevant HSE work instructions and job procedures
  • Maintain familiarity with HSE components of work instructions and job procedures
  • Report suggestions to improve HSE components to management
  • Report nonconformities and noncompliance with HSE components to management
  • Maintain awareness of actual or potential HSE impacts of activities and associated legal implications
  • Exercise authority to address HSE nonconformities, including reporting to supervision
  • Review work practices for HSE issues and impacts
  • Attend HSE awareness training sessions
  • Properly store materials that could impact the environment; dispose of aerosol cans and electrical waste in appropriate containers and areas

Other Functions

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area
  • Maintain records and reports as required

Job Requirements

Education & Knowledge

  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic math
  • Practical knowledge of AC/DC electrical and electronic theory, Ohms law, Kirchhoffs laws, voltage drop
  • Understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC)
  • Working knowledge of instrument loop operation and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)

Experience

  • 4+ years of qualified experience as an Instrument Electrician

Skills

  • Proficient in the use of test and calibration equipment and personal computers
  • Ability to read and apply schematic drawings, wiring diagrams, loop drawings, process flow drawings, and service manuals
  • Ability to create detailed asbuilt drawings of completed projects
