Job description

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

The Electrical Engineer position will work under the direct supervision of the System Engineer (Electrical) and provides engineering support to the Electrical Division staff and employees. This position performs a wide variety of planning, maintenance, design engineering, project management and construction, and operations activities related to routine, non-routine, and emergency restoration duties. Project areas may include grid/system design, operations and maintenance, planning, asset management, reliability, computer applications, safety, and root cause failure analysis.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist in designing project plans and specifications.
  • Produce drawings and material lists for electric facility construction and maintenance.
  • Maintain system maps and update asset registers in coordination with the Electrical GIS Coordinator.
  • Perform all recordkeeping associated with electric power system construction, outage analysis, service issues, maintenance activities, and engineering records.
  • Assist procurement and stores in inventory of materials and supplies and ensure sufficient data is maintained.
  • Perform field inspections of electric facilities to determine adherence of construction activities to specifications. Will also inspect power system facilities for maintenance needs and compliance to Starkville Utilities' and regulatory standards.
  • Perform layout and staking duties associated with small scale projects.
  • Assist in tracking, notating, and closing work orders associated with electrical projects.
  • Assist in transmission system monitoring, troubleshooting, and planning corrective actions. Work may include coordination with outside entities and contracted labor resources.
  • Assist with maintaining traffic signal detection devices, cabinets and signal monitoring and sequence in addition to recommending improvements to traffic signal infrastructure.
  • Respond to emergency situations (24x7), which may include technical assistance for lineman working on repairing or reenergizing circuits or clearing debris from electrical right-of -ways.
  • Oversight for streetlight and rental light inspection program.
  • Development and maintenance of Disaster Response Plan.
  • Providing supporting information and data for Electric Division grant development.
  • Available for emergency callout on nights and weekends.
  • Attend meetings, training, and workshops as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, & OTHER CAPABILITIES

The job is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions. There is exposure to hazardous electrical conditions, chemicals and materials on a daily basis. This exposure includes, but is not limited to, electrical shock. Requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, see, and effectively communicate with others for extended periods of time. May be required to lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds without assistance. Must be able to handle multiple tasks or projects simultaneously, work with numerous interruptions, and adjust to changing priorities. Must demonstrate good use of judgment and demonstrate the ability to properly deal with confidential matters. Must use good interpersonal skills.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from a four-year accredited institution.
  • Entry level through experienced electrical engineers will be considered.
  • Must possess a valid Mississippi Driver's License and acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Prior electric utility experience.
  • Strong computer and software skills to include Word and Excel and the ability to interpret computerized data.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and have the ability to collaborate with others.
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.

TRAINING PROGRESSION:

Candidates hired in this progression will automatically advance to the next Salary Grade when experience and required certifications are obtained provided that they are otherwise satisfying the duties and expectations of the position.

  1. Candidates at this level would have specified degree and meet the Education/Experience Requirements for the position.
  2. Candidates at this level must have specified degree and meet the Education/Experience Requirements for the position, have completed FE exam, and have at least five (5) years related experience or equivalent.
  3. Candidates at this level will have attained Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) status and will have a minimum of seven (7) years related experience or equivalent.
