What does an electrical engineering manager do?
What does an electrical engineering manager do?
As an electrical engineering manager, your job is to manage electrical engineering projects for your company. In this role, you may make hiring decisions, troubleshoot common problems, and give the final approval for the design of an electrical system. This is primarily a management position, but it does require you to know enough about electrical systems to make big decisions. Some details of this job depend on the employer. Large facilities and factories may have dedicated electrical engineering managers, while others may contract you for the duration of a specific job. This position also requires memorizing and enforcing all relevant regulations, including OSHA safety guidelines for working on or near electrical systems.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical engineering manager?
How does an electrical engineering manager typically balance leadership duties with technical involvement in projects?
What is the difference between Electrical Engineering Manager vs Electrical Engineer?
| Aspect | Electrical Engineering Manager | Electrical Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, often with management certifications | Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering |
| Work Environment | Oversees teams, manages projects, strategic planning | Design, develop, test electrical systems and components |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Used in manufacturing, construction, tech firms for leadership roles | Used across industries for technical roles |
The main difference between an Electrical Engineering Manager and an Electrical Engineer lies in their responsibilities. Managers focus on team leadership, project oversight, and strategic planning, while Electrical Engineers handle technical design, development, and testing. Both roles require a strong educational background in electrical engineering, but managers often have additional certifications or experience in leadership. Understanding these distinctions helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Job description
THE OPPORTUNITY
TransMedics is transforming organ transplant therapy with the Organ Care System (OCS)-the first portable warm-perfusion platform that keeps donor organs living and functioning outside the body. It's technology built to give more patients a chance at a transplant, and more transplant teams the confidence to say yes to an organ they'd otherwise have to turn away.
As TransMedics pushes into the next generation of OCS technology, the Sr. Director of Electrical Engineering will own the electrical architecture, design, and test strategy that brings that technology to life-from early concept through cleared, shipping product. This is a senior leadership role with a seat on the R&D leadership staff, shaping the long-range technical strategy and capability roadmap that will define TransMedics next decade of innovation.
WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS
This is a build role, not a maintain role. TransMedics is scaling fast, and the electrical engineering organization needs a leader who can build the team, systems, and capabilities to match that growth-while staying close enough to the technical details to step into a design review, unblock a verification failure, or work a supplier issue personally when it matters. We're looking for someone equally comfortable setting a three-year capability roadmap and sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with an engineer debugging a board.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Set department strategy - define the long-range strategy and capability roadmap for Electrical Engineering within R&D, including the skills, tools, and infrastructure needed to support TransMedics next phase of growth.
- Own electrical architecture - lead architecture, design, and testing for next-generation Organ Care Systems, ensuring every design meets project requirements and regulatory standards.
- Lead design teams - provide leadership, oversight, and technical guidance to internal and external design teams across new product development.
- Stay hands-on - bring a hands-on approach to electrical engineering strategy, prototyping, and design, for both new products and the products already in the field today.
- Own design requirements - lead the team through definition of electrical design requirements and specifications for new products.
- Drive design rigor - own documentation practices including cross-functional design reviews, theory of operation, DFMEA, and complete release packages (fabrication and assembly drawings, Gerber packages, and source files).
- Lead verification - own the verification strategy for electrical subsystem designs, including protocol and report generation across internal and external test labs.
- Support supply relationships - Lead the support of contract manufacturers for supply of PCBAs and components.
- Own goals & planning - set and monitor department goals aligned to corporate and project objectives, and own project planning, budgeting, and scheduling for the team.
- Partner cross-functionally - work closely with Quality Assurance, Supply Chain, Regulatory, and Clinical to keep programs moving.
STRATEGIC FOCUS AREAS
- Technical Strategy & Roadmap - define the electrical architecture and capability roadmap for next-generation OCS platforms.
- Design Excellence & Compliance - ensure every design meets safety and EMC requirements (IEC 60601, RTCA DO-160) the first time.
- Hands-On Technical Leadership - stay close enough to the work to personally guide a design review or unblock a verification issue.
- Team Building & Development - grow a high-performing electrical engineering organization built to scale with the company.
- Cross-Functional Partnership - work seamlessly with Quality, Supply Chain, Regulatory, and Clinical to bring products to market.
MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
- Direct management of the Electrical Engineering department, including performance reviews and professional development planning.
- Oversight of design contractors, co-ops, and interns as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- BS in Electrical Engineering plus 10+ years of electrical design experience for medical devices, including 10+ years managing an engineering team.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Advanced degree (MS/PhD) in Electrical Engineering.
- Direct knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards in the medical device industry.
- Strong leadership skills with experience leading complex research projects from concept to completion.
- Deep knowledge of the state of the art for electrical products, components, design methodology, and EDA software.
- Proven ability to lead a team (internal and external) to deliver high-quality, complex electromechanical medical devices compliant with US and international safety and EMC requirements (IEC 60601, RTCA DO-160, etc.).
- Class II or III medical device experience under IEC 60601.
- Hands-on experience designing, testing, and formally verifying digital and analog systems, including electrostimulation or ECG monitoring, microprocessor-based electromechanical designs, analog front-end data acquisition, motor control, communications interfaces, power supplies, and battery controller design.
- Experience with Altium Designer, Cadence OrCAD, and Allegro PCB Designer preferred.
- Clear, confident communicator, written and verbal.
- Comfortable exercising independent judgment and driving results autonomously.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- In-office environment.
- Ability to lift to 25 lbs.
- May travel up to 10% domestically.
