What is an electrical engineering internship?

Electrical engineering internships are short-term work experiences offered to students or recent graduates who are studying electrical engineering or a related field. These internships allow individuals to gain practical, hands-on experience in areas such as circuit design, power systems, electronics, and automation. Interns often work under the supervision of experienced engineers, assisting with real-world projects, testing prototypes, and learning industry-standard tools and software. Completing an internship can help students apply classroom knowledge, build professional skills, and enhance their resumes for future job opportunities.

What types of projects do electrical engineering interns typically work on?

Electrical engineering interns often assist with real-world projects such as circuit design, prototype testing, data analysis, or supporting the development of electrical systems. Interns frequently collaborate with engineers and technicians, contributing to both hardware and software aspects of ongoing projects. This hands-on involvement provides valuable experience in applying theoretical knowledge, troubleshooting technical issues, and understanding industry standards, all within a supportive team environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical engineering intern?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineering Intern, you need a solid understanding of circuit theory, electronics, and basic programming, usually supported by progress toward a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with simulation tools like MATLAB, SPICE, and CAD software, as well as exposure to laboratory instruments, is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective teamwork and communication skills help interns excel in collaborative and fast-paced environments. These skills ensure that interns can contribute meaningfully to projects, adapt quickly, and lay a strong foundation for a successful engineering career.

What is the difference between Electrical Engineering Internships vs Electrical Engineering Co-op?

AspectElectrical Engineering InternshipsElectrical Engineering Co-op
CredentialsTypically students pursuing a bachelor's degree in electrical engineeringUsually students in undergraduate programs, sometimes recent graduates
Work EnvironmentShort-term, project-based, often seasonal or summer rolesLonger-term, integrated with academic schedule, often alternating semesters
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in tech firms, manufacturing, and consulting companiesPopular in large engineering firms, utilities, and industrial sectors

Electrical Engineering Internships and Co-ops both provide hands-on experience for students, but internships are typically shorter and seasonal, while co-ops are longer-term, integrated with academic programs. Internships are ideal for exploring careers, whereas co-ops offer more in-depth industry exposure and often lead to full-time opportunities.

What do you do as an electrical engineering intern?

An electrical engineering intern assists with designing, testing, and analyzing electrical systems and components. They may work on circuit design, troubleshooting, and documentation using tools like CAD software and oscilloscopes, gaining practical experience under supervision. The role often involves supporting ongoing projects and learning industry standards and safety protocols.

Which internship is best for electrical engineering students?

The best electrical engineering internships are those offered by leading technology, manufacturing, and energy companies that provide hands-on experience with circuit design, power systems, and embedded systems. Internships that include exposure to industry-standard tools like MATLAB, AutoCAD, or PCB design software, and offer mentorship and project-based learning, are highly valuable for skill development and career growth.

Job Title: Electrical Engineering Supervisor

Job Description

The Electrical Engineering Supervisor leads and manages all aspects of the electrical engineering group, including personnel, equipment, and project execution. This role directs the design of power and control systems for overhead cranes and hoists, ensures compliance with customer specifications and electrical codes, and oversees the development of product designs, drawings, schematics, bills of materials, and control system programming. The primary focus is to deliver accurate, high-quality, and safe electrical products to manufacturing that meet all applicable codes and standards while keeping projects on time and on budget.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the electrical engineering department, including electrical engineers, drafters, and interns, ensuring effective use of personnel and equipment.
  • Direct the design of power and control systems for overhead cranes and hoists, including electric motor controls using contactors or variable frequency drives (VFDs), utility circuits, safety circuits, and operator controls.
  • Provide electrical oversight for all projects to ensure proper application of customer specifications, internal electrical standards, and applicable electrical code requirements.
  • Select and approve electrical components such as circuit breakers, transformers, motor starters, contactors, relays, PLCs, HMIs, AC inverters, braking resistors, and related equipment.
  • Oversee all phases of product and development engineering activities related to electrical systems, including product designs, production drawings, schematics, panel layouts, wiring interconnects, conduit sizing and layouts, bills of materials, and programming.
  • Ensure that all electrical designs released to manufacturing are accurate, comply with relevant electrical codes and standards, and are safe for operators and technicians.
  • Handle and properly delegate all developmental aspects of the largest and most complex material handling and crane projects, including electrical design, development of new software systems, modification of existing systems, and creation of testing programs.
  • Review and verify calculations for wire sizes and overload protection for crane models up to 800 volts DC and high-voltage AC, using customer specifications, electrical codes, and internal standards.
  • Review and confirm electrical panel short circuit current ratings (SCCR), arc flash analyses, and circuit breaker coordination studies.
  • Review and verify calculations for control panel heat loading and oversee the design and selection of appropriate heat exchanger systems.
  • Participate in resolving manufacturing problems in the shop or field by working with other engineers, service technicians, and cross-functional departments to research issues and develop effective solutions.
  • Oversee the design and development of computer programs, specifically PLC code and HMI programs, to control and monitor crane processes.
  • Consult with customers and operators to analyze and understand specifications, required crane functions, automation needs, and additional safety systems.
  • Oversee and delegate preparation of single-line diagrams, schematics, panel layouts, interconnect drawings, and conduit drawings based on customer specifications and project requirements.
  • Oversee sizing and proper selection of purchased components and bills of materials by reviewing internal standards, vendor information, and personal technical knowledge.
  • Provide daily technical supervision and guidance to electrical engineers, drafters, and layout drafters on jointly assigned projects.
  • Work closely with project managers to establish work requirements, meet release schedules, and review daily work activities to maintain project timelines.
  • Provide input on design improvements to the chief engineer, focusing on enhanced functionality and cost reduction.
  • Modify and improve existing circuit designs to address field issues, material obsolescence, and other requirements defined by leadership or customers.
  • Oversee design and installation of electrical control panels, enclosures, junction boxes, connection and cable diagrams, conduit diagrams, and general arrangement drawings, ensuring compliance with electrical codes, required clearances, and internal standards.
  • Travel to customer sites as needed to attend meetings or troubleshoot control systems when significant issues arise.
  • Review customer specifications during the bidding phase of new projects to identify concerns or risks and provide input for bid documents.
