What Do Electrical Engineers Do?
Electrical engineers design, test, and fix devices relating to electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism. An electrical engineer builds virtually every tool in the world that produces, conducts, or operates by way of electricity. Electrical engineers handle the research, design, installation, and handover of new electrical equipment. They also run tests on new devices and solve problems on malfunctioning systems and components. Electrical engineers work with a wide range of electronic equipment, from tiny microchips to supercomputers up to massive power station generators. They have their hands on a myriad of electrical components during their work, including conductors, batteries, capacitors, coils, magnets, transistors, and switches.

What is the difference between Electrical Engineer vs Electrical Technician?
| Aspect | Electrical Engineer | Electrical Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field | Associate degree or technical diploma in electrical technology |
| Work Environment | Design, development, and testing of electrical systems, often in offices or labs | Installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical systems, often on-site |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Engineering firms, manufacturing, power generation, and consulting | Construction, maintenance, and manufacturing industries |
Electrical engineers focus on designing and developing electrical systems, requiring a bachelor's degree, while electrical technicians handle installation and maintenance, typically with technical diplomas. Both roles are essential in the electrical industry but differ in responsibilities and educational requirements.

- Serve as project electrical engineer on healthcare and institutional projects, handling daily design and coordination under the direction of an electrical manager or senior PM.
- Design normal and emergency power distribution systems (one‑lines, panel schedules, feeders, branch circuits, equipment connections), including essential electrical systems for healthcare facilities (generators, ATS, critical branch distribution).
- Design lighting and lighting control systems, including layouts and photometric calculations, meeting code, energy, and user requirements.
- Design life‑safety and low‑voltage systems such as fire alarm, nurse call, structured cabling, and grounding/bonding in coordination with technology and security resources.
- Support power system studies (short‑circuit, coordination, arc‑flash, voltage drop) using appropriate tools under senior guidance.
- Produce coordinated drawings, specifications, and reports in Revit/BIM in collaboration with architectural, structural, mechanical, plumbing, and technology disciplines.
- Conduct field investigations and site observations to verify existing conditions and conformance.
- Apply NEC, NFPA 70, 72, 99, 101, 110, FGI Guidelines, and state/local regulations for healthcare facilities in Illinois, Missouri, and nearby states.
- Provide technical guidance and QA redlines to designers/junior engineers; support PMs with scope, level‑of‑effort, and schedule input; participate in client and internal coordination meetings.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering; EIT required, PE or ability to obtain preferred.
- Typically, 8-12+ years of building electrical design experience, including healthcare or other mission‑critical/institutional projects in an AEC/MEP consulting environment.
- Proven experience as a project‑level electrical engineer responsible for design production and multi‑disciplinary coordination.
- Strong working knowledge of NEC and relevant NFPA/FGI healthcare standards.
- Proficiency with Revit/BIM for electrical systems; experience with SKM, ETAP, or similar tools preferred.
