Job description

The Electrical Engineer is responsible for designing, evaluating, and supporting electrical systems and equipment for midstream facilities, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements. This role provides technical expertise throughout the project lifecycle, collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, and supports safe, reliable, and efficient facility operations.

JOB FUNCTIONS AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Specify, evaluate, and select electrical engineered and specialty equipment for operations and major/complex projects.
  • Prepare technical bids and/or proposal evaluations and recommendations.
  • Evaluate, prepare, and analyze designs of electrical systems including power generation, utility inter-ties, distribution, motor/plant logic, control systems, lighting, emergency power, supplies, grounding, alarm, and safety shutdown systems.
  • Review and/or negotiate utility contracts with outside vendors.
  • Provide technical assistance in the form of written reports, consultation, research, electrical system studies, National Electrical Code interpretations, recommendations, and utility contracts.
  • Prepare/review highly detailed short circuit, motor starting, voltage drop, load shedding, and relay coordination studies as needed to ensure plant reliability and personnel safety.
  • Ensure that company standards and strategies comply with the latest industry practices, safety, environmental, and process safety management requirements.
  • Develop and maintain electrical engineering specifications and facility electrical area classification drawings.
  • Optimize power distribution equipment and strategy for improved energy conservation.
  • Directly work with and review outside engineering contractors' designs, studies, drawings, and material selections to ensure conformance with Targa specifications and standards.
  • Investigate and resolve problems associated with new or existing facilities and their electrical and control system design.
  • Prepare budgetary and AFE quality cost estimates in addition to technical scopes of work.
  • Supervise field work and projects in terms of coordinating activities, monitoring the budget, and ensuring timely and accurate completion of multiple tasks at one time.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders (operations, construction, commercial, engineers, land/ROW, EHS, supply chain, accounting/planning, etc.).
  • Pursue continuous improvement by identifying and managing optimization projects to enhance safety, compliance, reliability, and/or operating margin.
  • Manage asset engineering efforts to ensure complete, accurate, and effective engineering support is provided to Targa customers.
  • Review project cost estimates & scope prior to commercial submittal; monitor cost & schedule performance throughout project execution phase; support startup & commissioning activities.
  • Develop asset short-term and long-term capital expenditure forecasts.

MINIMUM ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering from a 4-year accredited university.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes, government regulations, and standards pertaining to electrical systems such as NFPA, NEC, and API.
  • Ability and willingness to travel at least 25% of the time.
  • Exhibit proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with power system design, power distribution equipment, and protective relaying.
  • Experience with design and troubleshooting of electric motors and related equipment including motor starters, motor protection relay, and variable frequency drives.
  • Experience in electrical modeling programs (SKM, ETAP, etc.) for use to conduct power studies, short circuit calculation, coordination studies, arc flash calculation, and troubleshooting as required.
  • Basic understanding of preventative/predictive maintenance concepts and applications as it applies to electrical equipment.
  • Conceptual understanding of control systems and how they are designed, applied, and documented to oil and gas facilities.
