Job description

Electrical Engineer II

Our client is seeking a detail-oriented Electrical Engineer II – Relay Protection to support the design, analysis, and maintenance of power system protection and control systems. This exempt position is responsible for applying engineering principles to substation relay and metering design, protection system coordination, compliance activities, event analysis, and communication system configuration. The role works closely with engineering, operations, and field teams to ensure the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of electrical infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop accurate substation protection and metering designs, including drawings, specifications, and material lists.
  • Perform relay settings calculations, coordination studies, fault analysis, and system protection evaluations.
  • Prepare and review relay settings, wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Support the commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of protective relaying systems.
  • Investigate system disturbances and relay operations, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with operations, engineering, and field personnel on protection and control projects.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable reliability standards, industry regulations, and engineering best practices.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to engineers, technicians, and project teams.
  • Assist with system planning, infrastructure upgrades, and capital improvement projects related to protection and control systems.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 3–5 years of experience in protective relaying, substation engineering, or power systems engineering.
  • Knowledge of protective relays, relay coordination, fault analysis, and power system protection principles.
  • Experience with relay platforms such as SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens, or equivalent manufacturers.
  • Ability to interpret one-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, and electrical schematics.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, or the ability to obtain licensure, is preferred.
  • Experience with transmission and distribution systems, SCADA, and electric utility compliance standards is a plus.
