Job description

DEPCOM Power, a Koch Engineered Solutions company, is looking for a Lead Electrical Engineer. This role sits in DEPCOM's Engineering capability supporting utility-scale Solar and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) projects.This position has flexibility to be physically based in Scottsdale, AZ or Bedminster, NJ. The primary function of the Lead Electrical Engineer role is to serve as the primary technical leader for utility-scale Solar and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) EPC projects, owning the development of comprehensive electrical designs, technical quality, and engineering decisions from early design through construction, commissioning, and closeout.

This role does not provide VISA sponsorship.

What You Will Do Technical Design Leadership
  • Lead electrical design development for PV and Energy Storage projects from preliminary design through Issue For Construction (IFC).
  • Own the technical quality and completeness of assigned electrical drawing packages, including drawings, supporting calculations, studies, and other documentation.
  • Make and document sound technical decisions based on project requirements, applicable codes, design criteria, field constraints, and long-term operational considerations.
  • Ensure design packages are constructible, coordinated, and aligned with the project execution strategy.
Engineering Calculations and Studies
  • Lead or review system loss analyses, grounding studies, arc flash assessments, ampacity calculations, equipment sizing, and power systems studies.
  • Ensure calculations and studies are technically accurate, clearly documented, and appropriately reviewed.
  • Identify assumptions, risks, and decisions that may affect procurement, construction, commissioning, schedule, cost, or contractual performance.
Procurement, Equipment, and Vendor Support
  • Provide technical leadership for engineered specifications, bills of material, major equipment selections, and vendor technical evaluations.
  • Support procurement decisions by identifying technical risks, commercial impacts, long-lead considerations, and constructability implications.
Construction and Commissioning Support
  • Provide timely technical support to Construction, Field Engineering, Commissioning, Owners, and Subcontractors.
  • Lead technical resolution of RFIs, field issues, design changes, and construction-driven questions.
  • Support FATs, commissioning planning, startup activities, and project closeout when electrical engineering input is required.
Mentorship and Technical Development
  • Mentor Electrical Engineers through design reviews and practical explanation of engineering decisions.
  • Create clarity around the "why" behind design approaches, calculations, construction methods, and code requirements.
Project Interface and Technical Communication
  • Communicate technical risks, decisions, tradeoffs, and recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Represent Electrical Engineering in design reviews, project meetings, customer discussions, and technical issue resolution meetings as needed.
Compliance, Standards, and Continuous Improvement
  • Ensure electrical designs comply with contract specifications, project scope of work, applicable codes, industry standards, utility requirements, and DEPCOM technical standards.
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or another engineering discipline with electrical power systems experience
  • Experience in construction, EPC projects, utility-scale PV solar, Energy Storage, or power systems engineering
  • Applied knowledge of the National Electrical Code, National Electrical Safety Code, NFPA 70E, and applicable industry standards
  • Experience developing or reviewing electrical drawing packages, design studies, technical specifications, and engineering calculations
  • Willing and able to travel up to 15% to project sites or vendor facilities as required
What Will Put You Ahead (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Ability to gain P.E. licensure within 2 years
  • P.E. licensure
  • Experience leading electrical design for utility-scale PV solar, BESS, substation, medium-voltage, or high-voltage scopes
  • Experience with power systems calculations and tools such as ETAP, SKM, or similar analysis platforms
  • Experience with protection, grounding, arc flash, ampacity, equipment sizing, and utility interconnection requirements
  • Experience supporting construction, commissioning, FATs, RFIs, vendor submittals, and field issue resolution
  • Experience reviewing scope of work, contract requirements, technical exhibits, and change-related technical impacts

For this role, we anticipate paying $100,000 - $140,000 per year. This role is eligible for variable pay, issued as a monetary bonus or in another form.
