Job Function

Under the supervision of professional engineers, performs design, project engineering, and project management duties to support the capital construction programs of Hawaiian Electric. Responsibilities include preparing plans and designs, cost studies, schedules, specifications, and contracts; coordinating consulting engineers; and ensuring compliance with applicable codes and regulations.

Essential Functions
  • Prepare plans, layouts, design calculations, and related engineering design in accordance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Conduct project design and cost alternative studies, perform field inspections, and prepare associated reports.
  • Prepare and manage cost estimates, budgets, schedules, material and construction specifications, and construction contracts for assigned projects.
  • Perform project engineering and project management functions for major capital projects, including coordination with city, county, state, and federal agencies.
  • Develop and revise engineering techniques and procedures, and supervise design work by consultants.
  • Conduct field inspections to verify compliance and prepare reports of findings.
  • Participate in Company emergency response activities as assigned.
Basic Qualifications – Knowledge Requirements
  • BS degree in engineering from an accredited school in a discipline relevant to transmission and distribution.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of power engineering design, project engineering, project management, and construction methods for electric utility facilities, normally acquired through a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Working knowledge of personal computer applications such as spreadsheets and word processing, and the ability to learn additional software tools.
  • Knowledge of LA, SafeStart, and LEAN continuous improvement principles.
  • Understanding of City/County, State, and Federal laws, regulations, codes, and procedures related to utility projects.
  • Knowledge of Hawaiian Electric’s capital and O&M budget procedures (preferred).
  • Knowledge of system planning and protection (preferred).
Basic Qualifications – Skills Requirements
  • Demonstrated leadership, written, oral, and listening communication skills, and interpersonal skills to work effectively with all levels of the company and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Strong analytical and administrative skills for preparing and monitoring project requirements, resolving cost and time constraints, and managing conflicting priorities.
  • Ability to handle confrontational, difficult, or sensitive issues with professionalism, tact, courtesy, and discretion.
  • State of Hawaii driver’s license (or eligibility to obtain one).
Experience Requirements
  • 5 to 7 years of experience in designing additions, modifications, extensions, upgrades, and arrangements of company generation, transmission, substation, and communication/control systems.
  • At least 5 years of design experience in a specific area of expertise.
  • State of Hawaii Professional Engineer license in a relevant discipline for stamping drawings and obtaining construction permits.
