Position Description
Are you an electrical engineer with a strong technical background in designing and constructing electrical infrastructure? If so, Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer professional, and we hope you consider applying!
SPU's Project Delivery and Engineering Branch is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer. This position will work as part of a team to deliver new capital projects and directly support SPU field crews in operating and optimizing our existing infrastructure. The primary focus of the position will be wastewater and water pump station rehabilitation. The position will also support work across all of SPU's lines of business- Water, Drainage and Wastewater, and Solid Waste.

Job Responsibilities
The role will primarily support SPU's Wastewater Pump Station Rehabilitation projects, Spokane Street Water Pump Station projects, Ship Canal Water Quality projects, and Tolt Dam Power System upgrade projects.
  • Performs detailed electrical design work for facility projects (e.g., pumping stations, reservoirs, treatment plants, maintenance shops and solid waste transfer stations) as part of a multidisciplinary design team.
  • Acts a technical expert in one or more specialized areas of electrical engineering.
  • Supervises or performs planning, design, and implementation of electrical and communications systems, including restoration and relocation work.
  • Oversee the selection, procurement, installation, testing, commissioning, acceptance, operation and maintenance of electrical power, lighting, communications, signal and control facilities.
  • Review and coordinate technical submittals, design packages, and documentation prepared by consultants, manufacturers, and contractors to ensure compliance with project standards and specifications.
  • Works in the field with contractors and SPU crews to troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and control systems.
  • Reviews final plans, specifications, and agreements. Coordinates the work of electrical contractors, affected public agencies and utility crews.
  • Prepares power system analyses including arc flash studies for both new and existing facility power systems.
  • Prepares and reviews final plans, specifications, reports, contract documents and coordinate with electrical contractors, public agencies, and utility crews during construction.
  • Review and design modifications to existing facility electrical and SCADA systems.
  • Provides review of third-party plans for projects that may generate stray current on SPU facilities such as electrified rail.
  • Provides engineering oversight to ensure compliance with regulatory, safety, and operational standards.
  • Act as a mentor to junior staff as a subject matter expert.

Qualifications
Experience: Five (5) years professional Electrical Engineering experience.
Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
Education and Experience Equivalency: Other combinations of education and/or experience which provides preparation to do professional electrical engineering work.
Work Environment/Physical Demands
  • Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment.
  • Field assignments may entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, high voltage energized equipment and work in or near construction sites.

License, Certification and Other Requirements
  • Registration as a

The ideal candidate will have:
Three (3) or more years of experience in some of the following technical areas:
  • Design of low to medium-voltage (1-35 kV) industrial or commercial facility power systems.
  • Design or operation of plant facilities with integrated process controls.
  • Power system analyses using ETAP or similar software.
  • Configuration and optimization of process control equipment such as variable frequency drives.
  • Strong understanding of fundamentals of process instrumentation, control, and SCADA integration.
  • Hands-on troubleshooting of electrical systems.
  • AutoCAD Civil3D and AutoCAD Electrical (or equivalent).
  • Well-developed written and oral communications skills.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
