What does an electrical engineer MATLAB do?

An Electrical Engineer Matlab specializes in using MATLAB software to design, simulate, and analyze electrical systems and components. They apply their knowledge of electrical engineering principles to develop models, run simulations, and interpret results to improve product designs or solve technical problems. Their work often involves signal processing, control systems, circuit analysis, and data visualization. MATLAB skills are crucial for automating calculations, prototyping, and validating engineering concepts efficiently.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an electrical engineer MATLAB?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer with a focus on MATLAB, you need a strong background in electrical engineering principles, mathematics, and signal processing, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency in MATLAB for modeling, simulation, and data analysis—as well as familiarity with related toolboxes and potentially Simulink—is essential. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help you interpret complex data and convey technical information clearly. These capabilities ensure accurate system design, efficient troubleshooting, and successful collaboration on complex engineering projects.

How does an electrical engineer MATLAB typically collaborate with other engineering teams during project development?

Electrical Engineers who specialize in MATLAB often work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including hardware engineers, software developers, and project managers. They use MATLAB to simulate and model electrical systems, and their findings help inform design decisions and troubleshoot potential issues early in the development process. Effective communication and documentation are key, as engineers must translate complex data and simulation results into actionable insights for colleagues who may not have a MATLAB background. Regular meetings, shared reports, and collaborative problem-solving sessions are common to ensure alignment and project success.

What is the difference between Electrical Engineer Matlab vs Electrical Engineer Simulink?

AspectElectrical Engineer MatlabElectrical Engineer Simulink
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering, MATLAB certification often preferredBachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering, Simulink certification advantageous
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, and programming using MATLAB softwareModeling, simulation, and system design using Simulink environment
Industry UsageResearch, automation, signal processing, control systemsSystem modeling, control design, dynamic system simulation

Electrical Engineer Matlab focuses on programming and data analysis within MATLAB, while Electrical Engineer Simulink emphasizes system modeling and simulation using Simulink. Both roles often overlap and require similar qualifications, but they specialize in different aspects of electrical system design and analysis.

Is MATLAB used for electrical engineering?

Yes, MATLAB is widely used by electrical engineers for tasks such as modeling, simulation, data analysis, and algorithm development. It provides specialized toolboxes for signal processing, control systems, and power systems, making it a valuable tool in the field.

Job Id: CLI-45538-2 | Job Type: Contract

Position Summary

The Electrical Engineer – Power Innovation supports the safe, reliable, and efficient commissioning and startup of power generation and energy systems. This role provides electrical engineering expertise throughout pre‑commissioning, commissioning, and turnover, ensuring systems are properly tested, verified, and ready for operation.

Responsibilities
  • Provide electrical engineering support across commissioning, startup, and system turnover phases.
  • Lead and support electrical commissioning activities, including testing, verification, and troubleshooting of:
    • Switchgear, transformers, generators, and associated systems.
    • Protection relays and control systems.
  • Validate power system studies (short circuit, coordination, arc flash) and ensure alignment with as‑built conditions prior to energization.
  • Execute and oversee electrical testing activities (e.g., insulation resistance, hi‑pot, relay testing, functional verification).
  • Support pre‑commissioning activities, including loop checks, calibration, and protection system verification.
  • Coordinate and participate in FAT, SAT, PSSR, and RFSU processes to ensure systems meet requirements for startup and turnover.
  • Collaborate with Project Management, Construction, Commissioning, Controls, and Operations teams to ensure aligned execution and system readiness.
  • Work directly in the field to support testing, troubleshooting, and issue resolution during commissioning and startup.
  • Ensure compliance with NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE standards, and company safety requirements.
  • Support BESS and power generation system integration, including system‑level testing and performance validation.
  • Develop and maintain commissioning documentation, including ITRs, test records, redlines, and turnover packages.
  • Identify, track, and drive resolution of punch list items prior to system handover.
  • Coordinate with vendors to support installation, testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Promote continuous improvement and support development of standardized commissioning processes and tools.
  • Mentor and support development of junior engineers.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET accredited), or Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology with a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
  • 4+ years of experience in electrical engineering, power systems, or commissioning in power generation, industrial, or related industries.
  • Working knowledge of:
    • Electrical power systems and equipment (switchgear, transformers, generators).
    • Electrical drawings, one‑line diagrams, and control systems.
    • Commissioning, testing, and startup processes.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or actively pursuing.
  • Experience with power generation, data centers, or BESS systems.
  • Experience supporting or leading commissioning and startup activities.
  • Familiarity with FAT/SAT execution and turnover processes.
Technical Skills
  • Proficiency with power system analysis tools (e.g., ETAP, SKM, PSCAD, MATLAB, or similar).
  • Experience with protection relay testing and electrical test equipment (e.g., Omicron, Doble, Megger).
  • Understanding of:
    • Protection coordination and arc flash analysis.
    • Grid integration and energy storage systems.
    • DCS/SCADA systems and electrical integration.
Work Environment
  • Field‑based role supporting active construction, commissioning, and startup environments.
  • Requires the ability to work in industrial settings and follow all required safety protocols.
