About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer IV – Power Electronics to join Caterpillar's Modular Power Conversion System (MPCS) team supporting the development of next-generation utility-scale energy storage and power conversion products.

This is a highly hands-on engineering role focused on power electronics hardware design, validation, and troubleshooting. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience designing and testing Gate Driver Boards (GDB), Power Boards, inverter hardware, and high-power converter systems utilizing IGBT and Silicon Carbide (SiC) power devices.

The engineer will collaborate closely with electrical, controls, validation, manufacturing, and supplier teams to develop reliable, high-performance power conversion solutions from prototype through production.


Key ResponsibilitiesPower Electronics Hardware Design
  • Design, develop, analyze, and debug:
    • Gate Driver Boards (GDB)
    • Power Boards
    • Protection circuits
    • Interface circuits
    • Current and voltage sensing circuits
  • Develop electrical schematics and review PCB layouts for high-voltage/high-current applications.
  • Select and qualify components including:
    • IGBT modules
    • SiC MOSFETs
    • Isolated gate drivers
    • Current sensors
    • Protection devices
    • Power supplies
  • Perform design reviews and implement design improvements based on validation results.

Hardware Validation & Testing

Develop and execute comprehensive validation plans including:

  • Double Pulse Testing (DPT)
  • Switching characterization
  • Thermal testing
  • Fault-condition testing
  • Protection verification
  • Power-up and commissioning

Measure and analyze:

  • Switching losses
  • VCE overshoot
  • Current sharing
  • Gate drive performance
  • Desaturation behavior
  • Switching waveforms
  • Short-circuit response

Utilize laboratory equipment including:

  • Oscilloscopes
  • Differential probes
  • High-current probes
  • Thermal cameras
  • Power analyzers
  • Data acquisition systems

Root Cause Analysis & Troubleshooting
  • Investigate inverter and power electronics failures.
  • Analyze switching behavior and gate drive performance.
  • Troubleshoot:
    • IGBT failures
    • Shoot-through events
    • False turn-on
    • Over-current conditions
    • Over-voltage events
    • Thermal reliability concerns
  • Correlate laboratory data with simulations and analytical models.
  • Recommend corrective actions and design improvements.

  • Strong understanding of:
    • IGBT power modules

  • Experience designing and debugging power electronic PCBs.
  • Strong oscilloscope and waveform analysis skills.
