Electrical Engineer Internship Startup information

What is an electrical engineer internship at a startup?

An Electrical Engineer Internship at a startup is a temporary position where students or recent graduates work alongside experienced engineers to develop, test, and implement electrical systems or products in a fast-paced, innovative environment. Interns at startups often have the opportunity to take on diverse responsibilities, participate in hands-on projects, and directly contribute to product development. This role helps interns gain practical experience, build their professional network, and understand the unique challenges and rewards of working in a startup setting.

What can I expect in terms of mentorship and learning opportunities as an electrical engineer intern at a startup?

At a startup, Electrical Engineer Interns often work closely with senior engineers and founders, allowing for hands-on learning and frequent mentorship. You’ll likely tackle a variety of tasks, from circuit design to prototyping, and be given significant responsibility early on. The fast-paced, collaborative environment means you'll have direct access to experienced professionals and can quickly develop practical skills. Regular feedback and involvement in project meetings are common, helping you build a solid foundation in both technical and soft skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical engineer intern at a startup, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer Intern at a startup, you generally need foundational knowledge in circuit design, signal processing, and electronics, supported by progress toward a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools like MATLAB, SPICE simulators, PCB design software (such as Altium or Eagle), and basic coding languages is highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, initiative, and clear communication help interns excel in the dynamic, fast-paced startup environment. These skills and qualities enable interns to quickly contribute to innovative projects, collaborate across small teams, and drive technical progress in resource-constrained settings.

What is the difference between Electrical Engineer Internship Startup vs Electrical Engineer Intern?

AspectElectrical Engineer Internship StartupElectrical Engineer Intern
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in Electrical EngineeringSame as above, often students or recent grads
Work EnvironmentFast-paced startup setting, dynamic projectsVaries; can include startups, corporate, or research labs
Employer & Industry UsageStartups in tech, energy, or manufacturing sectorsBroader; includes corporate and research institutions

Both roles target students or recent graduates in Electrical Engineering, often with similar credentials. The main difference lies in the work environment: startup internships are typically fast-paced and dynamic, focusing on innovative projects, whereas other internships may be in more structured corporate or research settings. Understanding these differences helps candidates choose the internship that best fits their career goals.

Job description

You will architect and own our analog and power electronics, oversee PCB development from schematic to production, lead embedded firmware efforts, and build the sensing and validation infrastructure needed to run our process reliably at scale. You will work directly with the founding team, set technical direction for the electrical discipline, and mentor engineers as the team grows.

You might be a great fit if you...
  • Want to architect something genuinely new. You will design from the ground up in a space that has no existing playbook.
  • Are energized by constraint. Tight budgets, hard deadlines, and novel physics all at once. You perform well under those conditions and bring others along with you.
  • Take end-to-end technical ownership. From initial architecture to bring-up, validation, and production readiness, you drive it across the finish line and hold the standard.
  • Want to have an impact on decarbonizing manufacturing. You understand that more efficient processes and lighter parts have real consequences at scale.
  • Are a clear communicator and technical leader. You can explain your electrical choices across technical disciplines and make the people around you better.
Key responsibilities
  • Define and own the electrical architecture for a novel metal additive manufacturing platform, from system-level requirements through prototyping, validation, and production readiness.
  • Lead design and simulation of analog and power electronics circuits, ensuring performance, reliability, and safety across operating conditions.
  • Own PCB design and layout from schematic capture through fabrication and bring-up, applying best practices for signal integrity, EMC, thermal management, and design for manufacturability.
  • Develop embedded firmware for real-time control and monitoring of the system's electrical subsystems, interfacing with sensors, actuators, and motion hardware.
  • Define and execute electrical verification and validation procedures, including functional testing, design review, and FMEA.
  • Specify and qualify electronic components and subsystems for reliable operation in demanding manufacturing environments.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, controls, software, and process engineering to ensure clean system-level integration.
  • Establish and own electrical documentation standards: schematics, BOMs, design review records, and test reports.
  • Contribute to IP development and support patent preparation in collaboration with the founding team.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and interns as the team scales.
Required qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field; Master's or PhD a plus.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience designing and developing electronic hardware, with demonstrated progression of technical responsibility.
  • Deep proficiency in analog and power electronics design.
  • Experience with PCB design and layout (KiCad, Altium, or equivalent), from schematic through production-ready files.
  • Embedded firmware development experience and familiarity with real-time control systems.
  • Experience defining and executing electrical V&V procedures, including functional testing and design review processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to take hardware from concept through build, test, and iterative improvement, ideally across multiple product generations.
  • Prior experience in a hardware startup, industrial equipment, or advanced manufacturing context.
Preferred qualifications
  • Background in FPGA, DSP, or real-time embedded platforms.
  • Familiarity with design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for test (DFT) principles.
  • Exposure to FMEA, functional safety standards, or electrical regulatory compliance (IEC, UL, CE).
  • Experience managing or mentoring other engineers.
  • Interest in metal additive manufacturing or advanced manufacturing processes.
What we offer
  • Y Combinator and NSF-backed startup with differentiated, defensible technology.
  • Equity incentive based on long-term contributions and performance.
  • Direct collaboration with the founding team on hardware that does not exist elsewhere in the world.
  • A lean, low-bureaucracy environment where your technical judgment shapes product direction.
  • Flexible working arrangements and a culture that respects your time and autonomy.
  • The opportunity to file patents and contribute to a growing IP portfolio in a novel technical domain.
