Job description

Altec Integrated Solutions is a Canadian-owned company with over 25 years of experience designing precision machinery and advanced control systems. From building automation solutions for plywood and veneer mills across North America to developing ride and show control systems for the world's leading theme parks, our team thrives on pushing boundaries, solving complex challenges, and delivering innovative solutions.

We are proud of our hands-on, collaborative culture, where engineers don't just sit behind a desk; they see their designs come to life, travel to customer sites, and make a direct impact. With competitive compensation, 5% RRSP matching, extended health benefits, a fitness/wellness allowance, and a calendar full of company events, Altec is a place where your career and life can grow together.

The Controls Engineer/Technologist is responsible for designing, programming, and commissioning advanced control systems to meet client and project specifications. This is a full-cycle role where you'll work on everything from design and programming to on-site commissioning, making it an ideal opportunity for someone who thrives on technically challenging and rewarding work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Control System Design: Lead the design and layout of electrical control systems from concept to completion, ensuring they meet customer and project specifications.
  • Electrical Design: Develop detailed electrical schematics and layouts using tools such as AutoCAD or EPLAN while adhering to relevant standards, including UL508a and ISO 13849.
  • PLC Programming: Program and debug control logic for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), including Allen-Bradley, Siemens and Beckhoff systems, both from scratch and based on existing programs.
  • HMI Programming: Design and program Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) to create intuitive, user-friendly interfaces tailored to client needs.
  • Site Commissioning: Work as part of a team or independently oversee the commissioning of control systems at customer sites, ensuring seamless integration and optimal system performance.
  • Functional Specifications: Draft detailed functional specifications that guide the design and implementation of control systems.
  • Equipment Selection & Procurement: Evaluate and procure the necessary equipment for projects, ensuring functionality, quality, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Shop Floor Collaboration: Work closely with shop technicians to address production challenges and implement effective solutions.
  • Technical Guidance: Mentor junior engineers, providing technical guidance and oversight to ensure the delivery of high-quality designs and programming.
  • Process Compliance: Ensure compliance with Altec's processes, quality standards, and industry codes.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain clear documentation for all control system designs, software programs, and installation procedures.
  • Continuous Improvement: Contribute to the refinement of engineering processes to enhance efficiency and product quality.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or Diploma of Technology in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, or Industrial Engineering.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in control system design, programming, and commissioning.
  • Proficiency in programming Allen-Bradley and Siemens PLC platforms.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or EPLAN for electrical design.
  • Working knowledge of UL508a, NFPA, CSA, and ISO 13849 standards.
  • Willingness to travel significantly for project commissioning.

Why Join Altec?

  • Competitive pay
  • 5% RRSP matching
  • Extended health benefits
