Electrical Distributor information

What is an electrical distributor?

Electrical distributors are companies or professionals that purchase electrical products and equipment from manufacturers and then sell them to contractors, businesses, and end users. They play a crucial role in the supply chain by providing a wide range of electrical supplies, such as wiring, lighting, circuit breakers, and control systems. Electrical distributors often offer additional services like inventory management, technical support, and delivery to help customers complete their projects efficiently. Their expertise and product availability make them valuable partners for construction, industrial, and commercial clients.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an electrical distributor?

To thrive as an Electrical Distributor, you need strong knowledge of electrical products, supply chain management, and sales, often supported by experience in distribution or a related technical field. Familiarity with inventory management systems, customer relationship management (CRM) software, and basic electrical standards is typically required. Excellent communication, negotiation, and organizational skills help build customer relationships and efficiently manage orders. These abilities are essential for meeting client needs, ensuring timely delivery, and maintaining a competitive edge in the electrical supply industry.

What are common challenges faced by electrical distributors when managing inventory and customer orders?

Electrical Distributors often navigate the challenge of maintaining optimal inventory levels to meet customer demands while avoiding overstock or shortages. This requires strong organizational skills and proficiency with inventory management software. Additionally, they must coordinate closely with manufacturers, contractors, and internal sales teams to ensure timely order fulfillment and resolve any supply chain disruptions. Effective communication and adaptability are essential, as priorities can shift quickly based on project deadlines or market changes.

Job description

Inside Sales Representative

Electrical Distribution | Switchgear | Circuit Breakers

Burlingame, CA | Hybrid, 3 Days On-site

Compensation: $75k-85k Base + Uncapped Profit-Based Commission

1st Year target total cash compensation of approximately $100,000, with additional upside based on individual performance and gross profit production.

Overview:

We’re hiring an experienced Inside Sales Representative to join a specialized electrical distributor serving commercial, industrial, infrastructure, renewable energy, and other complex electrical customers throughout the U.S. This is not a traditional order-taking Inside Sales position. We specialize in solving difficult challenges across circuit breakers, switchgear, and power distribution equipment, including obsolete, discontinued, and hard-to-find products that traditional distribution channels may no longer be able to supply.

You’ll work directly with customers, Outside Sales, Purchasing, and Sourcing to quote opportunities, solve product challenges, grow accounts, and turn customer requests into profitable business.

For someone who understands electrical distribution and enjoys the hunt as much as the relationship, there is significant opportunity to build a book of business and increase earnings through an uncapped profit-based commission structure.

What You’ll Do:

  • Build and manage relationships with commercial and industrial electrical contractors, distributors, rep agencies, and other electrical buyers.
  • Prepare accurate quotes across circuit breakers, switchgear, and related electrical equipment.
  • Manage opportunities from initial RFQ through quote, follow-up, order, and delivery.
  • Compare supplier pricing, availability, lead times, and alternatives to develop competitive solutions.
  • Partner with Outside Sales to grow strategic accounts and identify new opportunities.
  • Proactively follow up on open quotes and re-engage customers to win additional business.
  • Cross-sell and expand customer relationships across additional electrical product categories

What We’re Looking For:

  • 3+ years of electrical industry experience preferred (Wholesale Distribution, Switchgear, Breakers, MCC's, etc.)
  • 2+ years of Inside Sales, Outside Sales, Quotations, or related customer-facing experience.
  • Experience with circuit breakers, switchgear, power distribution equipment, electrical commodities, or adjacent products strongly preferred.
  • Electrical distribution, manufacturer, rep agency, or secondary-market experience is highly relevant.
  • Strong commercial instincts with an understanding of pricing and gross profit.
  • Resourceful, responsive, organized, and comfortable managing multiple customer opportunities simultaneously.
  • Someone who enjoys solving problems rather than simply processing orders.

Why Join?

Join a lean, entrepreneurial electrical distribution organization where experienced salespeople have the autonomy to solve customer problems and are rewarded directly for profitable growth.

You’ll have access to a broad sourcing network, difficult-to-find electrical inventory, strong internal support, and an uncapped commission structure tied to the value you create. For someone coming from a larger distributor who wants more ownership, earning upside, and visibility, this is an opportunity to operate much more like you're building your own business.
