What does an electrical distribution designer do?

An electrical distribution designer assists with the design and layout of residential and commercial electric systems. Your responsibilities as an electrical distribution designer include designing these electric systems to avoid overload and prevent outages. You may update existing systems or create networks from scratch for new commercial or residential builds. Your duties also include collaborating with engineers on a design project. You use various computer programs to track deadlines and project progress. You may have to make reports to update other relevant departments on the build. Electrical distribution designers must also stay current on safety policies and procedures.

What does an electrical distribution designer do?

An Electrical Distribution Designer is responsible for planning and designing the layouts of electrical distribution systems that deliver electricity from substations to homes, businesses, and other end users. They create detailed drawings and specifications for overhead and underground power lines, ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulations. Their work often involves using specialized software, collaborating with engineers, and coordinating with utility companies to ensure reliable and efficient power delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical distribution designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Distribution Designer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, power distribution systems, and relevant industry standards, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, GIS systems, and utility design tools like AutoCAD and ESRI ArcGIS is essential, along with knowledge of NESC or NEC codes. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for collaborating with engineers, clients, and field teams. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and code-compliant power distribution designs that meet project and regulatory requirements.

How does an electrical distribution designer typically collaborate with engineers and field crews during a project?

Electrical Distribution Designers work closely with electrical engineers to interpret project requirements and ensure designs meet safety and regulatory standards. Throughout a project, they frequently coordinate with field crews to clarify design details, address site-specific challenges, and incorporate feedback from on-site conditions. This collaboration helps ensure plans are practical, constructible, and adhere to timelines. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as designers often serve as a bridge between engineering teams and field operations.

What is the difference between Electrical Distribution Designer vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectElectrical Distribution DesignerElectrical Engineer
CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related field; certifications like PE or EITBachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering; PE license often required

Industry UsagePower utilities, renewable energy, infrastructure projectsBroad engineering sectors including power, construction, manufacturing

Electrical Distribution Designers focus on creating detailed power distribution plans, often working closely with field teams. Electrical Engineers have a broader scope, including system analysis, project oversight, and design. Both roles require similar credentials and are vital in power and infrastructure projects, but their responsibilities and work environments differ.

Are electrical distribution designers in demand?

Electrical distribution designers are in demand due to ongoing infrastructure upgrades and the need for reliable power systems. They typically require knowledge of electrical codes, design software, and sometimes certifications, making their skills valuable in utility companies, engineering firms, and construction projects.

Job description

Description
Electrical Designer
Position Description
Cushing Terrell is hiring an Electrical Designer to work across nearly every scope of electrical design, including lighting, power distribution, refrigeration electrical systems, fire alarm coordination, data systems, and battery backup, on a national portfolio of retail remodels and ground-up builds for major clients. Based on-site in our Boise, Missoula, Billings, or Minneapolis office, you will work within a collaborative team producing construction documents from initial design through QC review and construction administration.
We invest in your growth through code education, professional development, and ongoing effort to match you to the clients and project types you find most engaging. We are also a firm with range: if your interests shift toward healthcare, education, or another market down the road, those opportunities exist here.
Within your first 30 days you will know how to navigate our systems and contribute billable work on a client prototype. By 90 days you are a full team member working across multiple scopes and identifying where you want to build depth. Long-term, the path forward is yours to define, whether that means becoming the go-to expert on a client relationship or stepping into a team lead role managing projects and other designers.
Position Salary Range*
The expected salary range for this position is $65,000 to $85,000 annually.
Required Qualifications**
  • 2 or more years of experience in electrical building design
  • Proficiency in Revit for electrical modeling, or demonstrated proficiency in electrical design principles with working knowledge of AutoCAD (candidates must be strong in at least one)
  • Working knowledge of NEC requirements, including branch circuit design, panel schedules, conductor sizing, and load calculations
  • Familiarity with lighting design fundamentals, including IES footcandle standards and lighting controls
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
Preferred Qualifications**
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (candidates without a degree are considered with 5 or more years of relevant experience)
  • Experience with retail or commercial building projects, including large-format or big-box retail
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or intent to pursue the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
  • Experience with SKM power analysis software, Bluebeam, or footcandle calculation tools such as AGi32 or similar
  • Experience with refrigeration electrical systems or advanced building automation systems

Did you know that some people hold back on applying to jobs if they don't meet 100% of the listed requirements? We don't want you to hold back! If you check most of the qualifications above and believe you could successfully do the work, we encourage you to apply!
Position Responsibilities***
  • Produce electrical design drawings in Revit and AutoCAD, including lighting plans, power layouts, panel schedules, and one-line diagrams, from initial design through QC review and permit-ready document sets
  • Perform electrical calculations including load calculations, conductor and breaker sizing, voltage drop analysis, and panel sizing to support accurate and code-compliant designs
  • Interpret client prototypes and standards to adapt designs for specific store locations, aligning client requirements with site conditions and local code compliance
  • Coordinate with Engineers of Record and fellow designers throughout the design process, incorporating redline comments and advancing drawings through multiple QC rounds to final sign-off
  • Support construction administration by responding to RFIs, reviewing permitting comments, and coordinating design changes with contractors and engineering team members
