What is electrical design?

Electrical design refers to the process of planning, creating, and documenting electrical systems for buildings, products, or infrastructure. This includes designing the layout for wiring, circuits, control panels, and other components to ensure safety, functionality, and compliance with codes and standards. Electrical designers use specialized software and technical knowledge to create detailed schematics that guide the installation and maintenance of electrical systems. Their work is essential for the proper functioning and safety of residential, commercial, and industrial projects.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in electrical design roles, and how can they be addressed?

Electrical Design professionals often encounter challenges such as managing tight project deadlines, ensuring compliance with constantly evolving codes and standards, and coordinating effectively with multidisciplinary teams. Addressing these challenges typically involves staying updated on industry regulations, leveraging design software for efficiency, and maintaining clear communication with colleagues in architecture, mechanical engineering, and construction. Proactively seeking feedback and participating in regular team meetings can also help in identifying potential issues early and ensuring project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and often a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or EPLAN), simulation tools, and relevant industry standards or certifications like PE licensure is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are vital soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications ensure the safe, efficient, and innovative design of electrical systems that meet project specifications and regulatory requirements.

What is the difference between Electrical Design vs Electrical Engineering?

AspectElectrical DesignElectrical Engineering
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in electrical design, drafting, or related certificationsRequires a degree in electrical engineering, often with professional licensure
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, CAD software, project planningResearch labs, project sites, technical analysis
Industry UsageUsed in construction, manufacturing, and product developmentApplied across power systems, electronics, and infrastructure

Electrical Design focuses on creating detailed plans and drawings for electrical systems, often using CAD tools. Electrical Engineering involves analyzing, developing, and testing electrical systems and components. While both roles require technical knowledge, Electrical Design emphasizes drafting and planning, whereas Electrical Engineering emphasizes analysis and problem-solving.

Are electrical design professionals in demand?

Electrical design professionals are in demand due to ongoing infrastructure development, renewable energy projects, and the need for updated electrical systems in various industries. Skills in CAD software, knowledge of electrical codes, and relevant certifications can enhance job prospects in this field.

How much is an electrical design paid?

Electrical design professionals typically earn between $60,000 and $100,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level roles may start lower, while experienced engineers with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher salaries. Compensation often includes benefits such as health insurance and retirement plans.

The Opportunity:
Our client, a manufacturing organization in Houston, TX has partnered with ML6 in their search for an Electrical Design Engineer. This position will play a key role in delivering high-quality electrical designs for custom power distribution equipment. Working closely with Engineering, Project Management, Production, QA, Testing, and vendors, you'll transform customer requirements into accurate, buildable engineering packages that support manufacturing from concept through completion.
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys solving technical challenges, collaborating across departments, and seeing their designs come to life on the manufacturing floor.
What You'll Be Doing:
  • Develop and maintain electrical design packages for medium- and low-voltage switchgear, motor control centers (MCCs), and related power distribution equipment.
  • Create and review one-line diagrams, power and control schematics, wiring diagrams, point-to-point drawings, layouts, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Ensure engineering packages are accurate, complete, and ready for manufacturing, purchasing, wiring, and testing.
  • Review vendor drawings and engineered products to verify compliance with project requirements and organizational standards.
  • Provide technical support to Production, QA, Testing, Project Management, vendors, and customers by resolving design questions and clarifying engineering intent.
  • Support component selection for breakers, relays, transformers, CTs/PTs, metering, protective devices, and other electrical equipment.
  • Participate in change reviews, drawing revisions, and continuous improvement initiatives that enhance engineering standards and reduce rework.
  • Help develop standardized design practices, templates, and documentation that improve quality and consistency.

What You'll Need to Be Successful:
  • Degree or diploma in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Experience with OEM switchgear, motor control centers (MCCs), or power distribution equipment manufacturing.
  • Experience designing or supporting electrical power distribution equipment, switchgear, MCCs, industrial controls, control panels, or similar products.
  • Ability to read and interpret one-line diagrams, control schematics, wiring diagrams, layouts, BOMs, and electrical specifications.
  • Strong understanding of electrical components including circuit breakers, relays, starters, CTs, PTs, control transformers, terminal blocks, meters, and protective devices.
  • Experience developing or reviewing Bills of Materials (BOMs) and electrical design documentation.
  • Excellent attention to detail with a commitment to producing accurate, buildable engineering packages.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with engineering, production, and cross-functional teams.
  • Familiarity with IEEE, ANSI, UL, NEMA, and NEC standards.
  • Experience reviewing vendor drawings and supporting manufacturing, testing, QA, or field service.
  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems..
