Electrical Design Intern information

What does an electrical design intern do?

An Electrical Design Intern assists engineers in designing, developing, and testing electrical systems and components for various projects. Typical responsibilities include creating and updating schematics, drafting layouts using CAD software, performing calculations, and supporting prototype development. Interns also help with documentation, conduct research, and collaborate with other engineering teams. The internship provides hands-on experience and helps students apply theoretical knowledge to real-world engineering problems.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an electrical design intern typically expect during their internship?

As an Electrical Design Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of tasks such as creating and updating electrical schematics, supporting senior engineers in the design and testing of electrical systems, and assisting with documentation and BOM (Bill of Materials) preparation. Interns often participate in team meetings, collaborate with other engineering disciplines, and may even get hands-on experience with prototyping or troubleshooting. This role provides valuable exposure to industry-standard design tools and real-world project workflows, making it a great stepping stone for a future career in electrical engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical design intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Design Intern, you generally need a background in electrical engineering or a related field, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks), circuit simulation tools, and basic programming languages is often expected. Attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills that help interns collaborate and learn efficiently. These abilities ensure accurate designs, smooth project execution, and valuable contributions to engineering teams.

What is the difference between Electrical Design Intern vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectElectrical Design InternElectrical Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recently completed a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related fieldBachelor's degree in electrical engineering; often requires licensure or professional certification for advanced roles
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, often in engineering firms, construction sites, or manufacturing plantsFull-time professional roles in design, development, testing, or project management
Employer & Industry UsageInternship programs in engineering firms, construction companies, or manufacturing industriesEstablished companies, consulting firms, or government agencies in electrical engineering sectors

The main difference between an Electrical Design Intern and an Electrical Engineer lies in experience, responsibilities, and career stage. Interns are typically students gaining practical experience, while Electrical Engineers are full-time professionals responsible for designing, analyzing, and managing electrical systems.

Do electrical design interns get paid?

Electrical design interns are often paid positions, with compensation varying by company, location, and internship duration. Many internships offer hourly wages or stipends, and some may be unpaid depending on the program and industry standards. Interns typically gain experience with design software and electrical systems during their paid internship period.

Job description

About Black Diamond Coatings

Black Diamond Coatings, Inc. (BDC Brands) is a veteran- and family-owned manufacturer of premium, environmentally friendly home improvement products. Our DOMINATOR®, AQUA-X®, and OBSESS® brands are made in the USA and distributed through Amazon, Lowe’s, The Home Depot, Walmart, and our own e-commerce site. Headquartered in Brooksville, Florida, we operate with an entrepreneurial spirit, high integrity, and a strong belief in teamwork, continuous improvement, and excellence.

Mission: Creating Trustworthy Solutions Beyond Expectations.

Vision: Our trusted brands deliver home improvement product solutions that “WOW” our DIY and Pro customers, setting the standard for quality and innovation.

Position summary

BDC Brands is building a new manufacturing facility, and this intern will work directly alongside the Plant Engineer through the design process. You’ll get hands-on exposure to real facility layout, equipment placement, and process flow design using AutoCAD or similar CAD software — supporting an active capital project, not shadowing one.

This role is a growth opportunity. The right person will build real CAD and facility-design skills, learn how a manufacturing plant actually gets planned and built, and put themselves in a strong position for future opportunities with BDC as we grow.

Champion BDC’s core values

  • Embody BDC’s core values in every interaction — with team members, vendors, suppliers, and customers.
  • Hold yourself accountable to the BDC standard: doing more with less, delivering exceptional results, and never giving up.
  • Bring positive energy, a sense of urgency, and a “figure it out” mindset to design problems.
  • Model safe behavior at all times and take personal responsibility for the safety of those around you.

Key Responsibilities

CAD and facility design support

  • Assist in creating and revising 2D/3D CAD drawings for facility layout, equipment placement, and process piping/electrical runs.
  • Support the Plant Engineer in translating process requirements into workable floor plans.
  • Research equipment specs, footprints, and clearance/code requirements.
  • Support basic site measurements and field verification as needed.

Documentation and drawing management

  • Help maintain drawing revisions, version control, and documentation standards.
  • Attend project meetings and take notes on design changes to keep drawings current.

Cross-functional support

  • Coordinate with Operations and Maintenance to confirm design details reflect real production needs.
  • Flag questions or gaps early rather than guessing on drawing details.

Safety and general support

  • Follow all safety protocols on the plant floor and construction areas.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the facility design project.

Job Qualifications

Required

  • Currently pursuing a degree or certificate in Engineering Technology, Drafting & Design, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD or similar CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor, Revit); coursework experience is sufficient, no professional experience required.
  • Comfortable reading technical drawings and basic blueprints.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Able to work on-site in Brooksville, FL.

Preferred

  • Exposure to civil, mechanical, or electrical drafting coursework.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing or industrial environments.
  • Basic understanding of process flow or piping/instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).

Competencies

  • Self-starter who asks questions and wants to learn how a manufacturing facility actually gets built.
  • Detail-oriented — drawings and documentation are accurate and complete without being asked twice.
  • Coachable and receptive to feedback from the Plant Engineer and broader team.
  • Comfortable asking for clarification rather than assuming.

Physical demands

  • Must be able to walk the plant floor and active construction areas for extended periods.
  • Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds; close-vision work required for detailed drawings.

Work environment

  • Mix of office/design work and time on an active manufacturing and construction site.
  • Exposure to job site conditions including noise, dust, and moving equipment.
  • PPE required when on the plant floor or construction areas: safety glasses, boots, and hard hat.

Compensation and benefits

  • Paid hourly internship, competitive with local market rates.
  • Direct mentorship from the Plant Engineer on a real, active facility design project.
  • Portfolio-ready CAD work on an actual industrial build.
  • Potential path to future employment with BDC Brands as we grow.
