What is an electrical design engineer?

As an electrical design engineer, you design projects for power distribution and electrical systems. You use software, electrical products, and other equipment to make your designs a reality. Your job duties involve all aspects of the design process, such as modeling and drafting, creating layouts, and building electrical circuits. You need strong research skills and extensive knowledge of electrical design to perform your work. Your job involves travel to work sites to oversee the implementation of your design projects on jobs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Design Engineer, you need a solid grounding in electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and typically a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or EPLAN), simulation tools (like MATLAB or PSpice), and knowledge of industry standards are commonly required. Strong problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication make candidates stand out in this role. These capabilities are vital to ensure safe, innovative, and reliable electrical systems that meet project requirements and regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges electrical design engineers face when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Electrical Design Engineers often collaborate with mechanical, civil, and software teams on multidisciplinary projects, which can present challenges such as aligning design specifications, managing conflicting requirements, and maintaining clear communication across departments. Balancing the electrical system's needs with space constraints, thermal considerations, and integration with other systems requires strong problem-solving skills and adaptability. Successful engineers proactively coordinate with other teams, participate in regular design reviews, and stay organized to ensure project milestones are met efficiently.

What is the difference between Electrical Design Engineer vs Electrical Project Engineer?

AspectElectrical Design EngineerElectrical Project Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning electrical systems and componentsManaging electrical project execution and coordination
Required SkillsElectrical design, CAD, technical analysisProject management, scheduling, communication
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, engineering firmsConstruction sites, project sites
CertificationsPE license often preferred, engineering degreesPE license beneficial, project management certifications

Electrical Design Engineers focus on creating and developing electrical systems and drawings, while Electrical Project Engineers oversee the implementation, coordination, and management of electrical projects. Both roles require technical knowledge and often collaborate, but their core responsibilities differ in design versus project execution.

Job description

Position Title: Senior / Intermediate Electrical Engineer (Power Infrastructure)
Position Description: Protingent Staffing has an exciting opportunity for a Senior or Intermediate Electrical Engineer located in Coeur d'Alene, ID.
Job Description:
  • This role supports a high-visibility Energy & Transmission Program focused on electric power transmission, generation, and grid infrastructure development.
  • This position focuses directly on serving as an engineering subject matter expert (SME), translating complex technical load flow, thermal limits, and stability analyses into strategic business options for clients and executive stakeholders.
  • This is a collaborative engineering role for an innovator who excels at bridging high-voltage power transmission concepts with strategic business objectives in a dynamic remote work environment.
  • Working closely with project managers, client teams, and electric utilities, you will evaluate grid strategies, navigate utility interconnection processes, and drive power delivery projects from scoping through execution.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Subject Matter Expertise & Leadership: Act as a technical SME supporting project/facility managers to identify issues and develop solutions; prepare technical reports and represent the organization in regional planning and strategy roles.
  • Strategic Advisory: Translate highly technical load flow results, thermal limits, and stability analyses into clear business risks, timeline impacts, and financial options for non-technical executives or investors.
  • Project Scoping & Due Diligence: Scope power delivery projects, prepare RFPs, develop rough order of magnitude (ROM) cost estimates, support land/permit acquisitions, and provide technical due diligence for EPC projects.
  • Utility & Interconnection Engagement: Lead client engagement with electric utilities regarding feasibility studies, power topology design, and interconnection processes for both electric load and generation.
  • Compliance & Grid Studies: Navigate ISO/RTO interconnection processes and maintain NERC/FERC compliance. Perform contingency analysis (N-1, N-1-1) and craft practical mitigation solutions (e.g., reconductoring, Remedial Action Schemes).
  • Simulation & Analytics: Analyze operational scenarios in simulated environments to identify grid challenges and opportunities.

Job Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in power delivery, electric power transmission, or generation.
  • Proficiency with load-flow analysis software (e.g., PowerWorld, PSS/E, GE-PSLF, or ETAP).
  • Knowledge of or experience with three-phase, high-voltage power transmission and distribution (69kV - 765kV).
  • Ability to read and interpret construction documents, technical specifications, schematics, and RFPs.

Preferred Job Qualifications:
  • 7+ years of power systems experience with a major utility, ISO/RTO, or specialized power delivery consultancy (including electric utility capacity planning and operations).
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license
  • Experience with transmission planning (stability, short-circuit, voltage analysis), MW-scale microgrids (emphasis on natural gas), BESS, inverter-based resources, and high-demand loads (e.g., data centers).
  • Advanced degree (MSEE) and familiarity with scripting languages (Python, MATLAB).

Job Details:
  • Job Type: Direct Hire
  • Location: Coeur d'Alene, ID (Remote USA or Hybrid-Eligible)
