What is electrical design drafting?

Electrical Design Drafting is the process of creating detailed technical drawings and plans for electrical systems within buildings, machinery, or infrastructure. These drafts are used by engineers and electricians to guide the installation and maintenance of wiring, lighting, power distribution, and control systems. Electrical design drafters use computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce accurate and clear schematics, layouts, and diagrams. Their work helps ensure that electrical systems are safe, efficient, and compliant with industry codes and standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical design drafter?

To thrive as an Electrical Design Drafter, you need a solid understanding of electrical principles, drafting techniques, and an associate degree or certification in drafting or electrical engineering technology. Proficiency with computer-aided design (CAD) software such as AutoCAD, Revit, or SolidWorks is typically required, along with familiarity with industry standards like the National Electrical Code (NEC). Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate, compliant, and efficient electrical designs that meet project and safety requirements.

How does an electrical design drafter typically collaborate with engineers and other team members during a project?

Electrical Design Drafters work closely with electrical engineers, project managers, and sometimes construction teams to translate engineering concepts into precise technical drawings. Regular coordination meetings and design reviews are common to ensure that drawings meet project specifications and compliance standards. Drafters also frequently update drawings based on feedback or changes and help resolve design issues that arise during project execution. Effective communication and attention to detail are essential for successful collaboration in this role.

What is the difference between Electrical Design Drafting vs Electrical Engineering?

AspectElectrical Design DraftingElectrical Engineering
CredentialsTypically technical diplomas or certifications in drafting or CAD softwareBachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, CAD labs, construction sitesDesign, research, testing labs, project management
Employer & Industry UsageArchitectural, construction, manufacturing firmsEngineering firms, utilities, industrial companies
Primary FocusCreating detailed electrical drawings and schematicsDesigning electrical systems, analyzing performance, solving engineering problems

Electrical Design Drafting focuses on creating detailed electrical drawings using CAD software, while Electrical Engineering involves designing, analyzing, and optimizing electrical systems through engineering principles. Both roles are essential in the electrical industry but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Are electrical design draftsmen in demand?

Electrical design drafting is a stable profession with steady demand in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and energy. Skilled draftsmen proficient in CAD software and electrical codes are often sought after, especially as infrastructure projects and electrical systems grow in complexity.

Over the past 24 years, AES has attracted many innovative minds in the business to work on complex, challenging, and exciting projects. Attracting the right talent has contributed to the quality of our work and helped us build our reputation for providing award-winning designs.

About the Role

The Intermediate Electrical Designer will be based out of our Calgary office and will be responsible for developing electrical design details and integrating them into working drawings, preparing construction documents for clients, completing site reviews, and attending meetings. We are looking for someone with consulting experience and initiative who wants to work in a collaborative team environment with a mentor to develop their technical skillset. The designer in this role will focus on electrical systems for healthcare, infrastructure, mixed-use developments, institutional facilities, and commercial facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work under the direction of Project Managers to develop construction document packages and reports.
  • Assist lead engineers with planning, studies, and assessments.
  • Conduct site reviews to determine and document existing conditions.
  • Prepare engineering studies and design calculations, such as feeder sizing, voltage drop, overcurrent protection, fault current, and lighting calculations.
  • Lay out electrical equipment and wiring devices, branch circuiting, lighting design, life safety systems, communication systems, and security systems.
  • Prepare electrical design markups for the drafting department and coordinate electrical package production.
  • Liaise with utilities for new services.
  • Oversee the construction and commissioning process and prepare documentation, including field reports, change orders, and shop drawing reviews.
  • Liaise with architects, interior designers, and other professionals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Apply familiarity with the Canadian Electrical Code.
  • Use AutoCAD to support design and documentation work.
  • Apply knowledge of industry-specific codes and standards, including ASHRAE, ABC, NECB, and other relevant requirements.
