Ahlstrom's Rhinelander paper mill is HIRING NOW for an Electrical and Instrumentation (E&I) Apprentice.
The Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Apprentice works under the guidance of licensed or journey-level E&I technicians to develop the skills needed to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical and instrumentation systems. This apprenticeship combines hands-on training with classroom or technical instruction to prepare the apprentice for a successful career in industrial electrical and instrumentation work.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with the installation, calibration, testing, and maintenance of electrical and instrumentation equipment
  • Support troubleshooting of electrical circuits, control systems, PLCs, HMI's, VFDs, power distribution, electric motors, control circuits, and instrumentation.
  • Read and interpret basic electrical schematics, wiring diagrams
  • Safely use hand tools, power tools, and testing equipment (multimeters, loop calibrators, etc.)
  • Observe and follow all safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, and electrical safety standards
  • Perform preventive maintenance activities under supervision
  • Maintain accurate documentation of work performed and training hours
  • Participate in classroom, online, or off-site technical training as required
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area
  • Progressively perform more complex tasks as skills and competencies develop

Apprenticeship Learning Areas
  • Industrial electrical systems (AC/DC, motors, VFI's, VFDs)
  • Instrumentation (pressure, temperature, flow, level devices)
  • Control systems and PLC fundamentals
  • Calibration techniques
  • Troubleshooting and diagnostics
  • Electrical and safety codes (NEC, NFPA, OSHA, site-specific standards)

Qualifications
Required
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Basic math skills (algebra preferred)
  • Mechanical and technical aptitude
  • Willingness to learn and follow instructions
  • Ability to work safely in an industrial environment
  • Must pass post offer physical testing requirements

Preferred
  • Enrolment in or completion of a technical/trade school program: Electromechanical, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical System Maintenance.
  • Basic knowledge of electricity or electronics
  • Previous manufacturing, maintenance, or construction experience
  • Familiarity with hand and power tools

Training Commitment
  • Apprentices must successfully complete all Company paid, required coursework, on-the-job training hours, and evaluations
  • Attendance and active participation in training is mandatory
