Job description

The Senior Design Engineer will provide technical leadership in the design, development, and sustainment of fractional horsepower electric motors and related motion products. This role is a hands on technical contributor responsible for executing product designs, supporting manufacturing, and driving continuous improvement across existing and new motor platforms.
The Senior Design Engineer works cross functionally with Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Sales, and Customers to deliver reliable, cost effective motor solutions that meet performance, quality, and regulatory requirements. This position will also provide mentorship of other engineers and technical staff.

Key Responsibilities
Product Design & Development
  • Design and develop fractional horsepower electric motors (e.g., BLDC, PMDC, stepper, AC motors) from concept through production release.
  • Generate and review engineering calculations, CAD models, drawings, specifications, and bills of material.
  • Apply sound engineering principles related to magnetics, thermal performance, mechanical integrity, and materials.

Analysis, Testing & Validation
  • Perform and interpret electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical analyses to optimize motor performance and reliability.
  • Support prototype builds, testing, and validation activities; analyze results and implement design improvements.
  • Assist with product qualification, life testing, and compliance testing.

Manufacturing & Sustaining Support
  • Partner with Manufacturing Engineering to ensure designs are manufacturable, repeatable, and cost effective (DFM/DFA).
  • Provide engineering support for production issues, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
  • Participate in value engineering and continuous improvement initiatives.

Cross Functional Collaboration
  • Support customer applications by reviewing requirements, evaluating feasibility, and assisting with technical solutions.
  • Collaborate effectively with Quality, Supply Chain, and Sales teams to resolve technical issues and support product launches.
  • Participate in annual budget discussions and cost reduction projects.
  • Mentor and coach junior and mid-level engineers, promoting best practices in design, documentation, and problem solving.

Requirements
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
Preferred Experience or Skills
  • 10+ years of engineering experience, with a strong focus on electric motor or rotating machinery design.
  • Experience with Autodesk CAD tools (e.g., Inventor, Fusion) and engineering analysis methods.
  • Working knowledge of electric motor fundamentals: windings, magnets, laminations, bearings, insulation systems.
  • Familiarity with applicable standards (UL, IEC, NEMA, CE, RoHS).
  • Master's degree in engineering.
  • Experience supporting products in production and field environments.
  • Exposure to motor drives, controls, or integrated motion systems.
  • Experience in industrial, medical, robotics, or automation markets.
