About EES

Caterpillar's Electrification & Energy Solutions division (E+ES) is focused on advanced power systems development with emphasis on electrification to provide sustainable power solutions to our customers. The E+ES Power Electronics team is responsible for end-to-end design and development of power electronics for multiple Caterpillar applications.

Job Summary

The Power Electronics team is responsible for end-to-end design and development of power electronics for multiple Caterpillar applications. We are seeking an Electrical Design Engineer to be responsible for the leadership and delivery of electrical designs necessary for the successful development of low voltage power electronics components, including inverter and converter systems. This will include design, layout and simulation of printed circuit boards, bus bars, sensors, harnesses, and electronics packaging. You will have the opportunity to work with and learn from a highly experienced team of engineers having significant experience across Caterpillar electric drive applications.

Job Duties / Responsibilities
  • Work with the power conversion application engineering groups to establish the application architecture and electrical requirements for power electronics components/systems.
  • Develop and implement the electrical architecture for power electronics to be used in NPI & NTI machine/product programs.
  • Develop design concepts and detailed electrical designs and schematics for low voltage (\le;1500V) power electronics inverter and converter systems.
  • Lead other engineers within the Cat global team for electrical design and the release of prints for production.
  • Play an active role in supplier collaboration and selection and development of the potential suppliers for electrical designs โ€“ some limited travel will be required.
  • Identify and work with other Caterpillar SMEs to ensure a comprehensive design which meets mechanical, thermal, life and performance requirements.
  • Stay up to date with the latest advances in power electronics technologies.
  • Prepare and support execution of test plans to verify designs with simulation and to validate electrical designs in the lab and on prime product.
What you have
  • Degree Requirement: Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate Degree in Electrical, Power Electronics, Computer Engineering or equivalent with appropriate experience in the field.
  • Technical Excellence:
    • Previous product development experience (design / analysis).
    • Demonstrated understanding of electrical systems with special emphasis on power conversion or electric drive systems.
    • Experience with Power Electronics/electric drive systems and/or components such as IGBT's, Gate Drive Boards, Current Sensors, Power Suppliers.
    • Experience with quality tools including FMEA, APQP, BIQ & PPAP.
    • Effectively performs the technical job aspects, continuously building knowledge and keeps up-to-date on technical and procedural job components.
    • Applies technical operating and project standards based on achieving excellence in delivered products, technologies and services.
    • Applies current procedures and technologies to help resolve technical issues in one's general area of technical competence.
    • Helps others solve technical or procedural problems or issues.
  • Product Design and Development:
    • Knowledge of product features; ability to design, build, and develop a new product, technology, or service from concept through to production.
    • Experience with launching new technology or products into production (NTI, NPI), including concept validation, design validation and NPI issue resolution process.
    • Builds complex circuits for power and signal transmission taking into account signal integrity, EMC, thermal management, creepage and clearance requirements.
    • Communicates with peers and mentors to understand various requirements of product design.
    • Tests and evaluates alternative means of production being considered for use.
    • Uses automated tools to simulate, design or modify the design of a product.
    • Assists in building and testing a complex prototype of product.
  • Computer-Aided Design & Engineering:
    • Knowledge of tools and techniques of specialized graphics programs; ability to produce, analyze, simulate and test product design drafts.
    • Experience with Circuit Design, Schematic Design, CFD & FEA analysis tools such as Matlab, PSPICE, Altium, Mentor Graphics, Ansys, and Sherlock.
    • Consults on benefits and drawbacks of board layout design differences.
  • Analytical Thinking:
    • Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.
    • Seeks discrepancies and inconsistencies in available information; explains variances.
    • Organizes and prioritizes the sequence of steps to be taken to remedy the situation.
    • Identifies many possible causes for a problem based on prior experience and current research.
    • Quantifies the costs, benefits, risks and chances for success before recommending a course of action.

    • Trains others on advanced tools and approaches of product design.
    • Monitors the processes and procedures of a complex product design to ensure functional requirements are met.
    • Evaluates feedback from customers and consults on functional weaknesses.
    • Controls design and development costs of a proposed product through effective resource coordination.

Position is located in Mossville, IL, Dallas, TX, Tucson, AZ or Lafayette, IN. Relocation assistance is available. Sponsorship is not available. This is an in-office position, Mon-Fri.

Summary Pay Range

$95,640.00 - $143,520.00. Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
