What does an electric car mechanic do?

An electric car mechanic is a specialized automotive technician who diagnoses, maintains, and repairs electric vehicles (EVs). They work on unique components such as high-voltage battery systems, electric motors, charging systems, and electronic control units. In addition to standard vehicle maintenance, electric car mechanics are trained to handle the safety protocols associated with high-voltage systems and stay updated on the latest EV technology.

How does the daily work of an electric car mechanic differ from that of a traditional automotive mechanic?

As an electric car mechanic, your daily responsibilities will focus more on diagnosing and repairing high-voltage battery systems, electric drivetrains, and complex electronic components rather than working with internal combustion engines or exhaust systems. You'll regularly use specialized diagnostic tools and software to troubleshoot issues unique to electric vehicles. Collaboration with other technicians and ongoing training are common, as technology in this field evolves rapidly. This role often involves working closely with manufacturers' guidelines to ensure safety and accuracy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electric car mechanic, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electric Car Mechanic, you need strong knowledge of automotive systems, high-voltage safety protocols, and experience with electric vehicle (EV) powertrains, typically gained through formal automotive training or certification. Familiarity with diagnostic software, specialized EV tools, and certifications like ASE L3 (Light Duty Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Specialist) are commonly required. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for diagnosing issues and explaining repairs to customers. These competencies ensure safe, efficient service and help keep pace with the rapidly evolving electric vehicle industry.

What is the difference between Electric Car Mechanic vs Hybrid Vehicle Technician?

AspectElectric Car MechanicHybrid Vehicle Technician
CertificationsEV-specific certifications, ASE certificationsHybrid certifications, ASE certifications
Work EnvironmentElectric vehicle service centers, auto repair shopsAuto repair shops, dealerships
Industry UsageElectric vehicle manufacturers, independent repair shopsHybrid vehicle brands, dealerships
Work FocusBattery systems, electric motors, power electronicsBoth electric and combustion systems, battery maintenance

Electric Car Mechanics specialize in electric vehicle systems like batteries and motors, while Hybrid Vehicle Technicians work on both electric and traditional hybrid systems. Both roles require similar certifications and often work in similar environments, but their focus areas differ based on vehicle type.

Are electric car mechanics in demand?

Electric car mechanics are in increasing demand due to the growing popularity of electric vehicles and the need for specialized repair skills. As automakers shift toward electric models, technicians with knowledge of electric drivetrains, batteries, and diagnostic tools are highly sought after in the automotive industry.

How do you become an electric car mechanic?

To become an electric car mechanic, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, followed by specialized training or certification in electric vehicle technology. Many mechanics pursue an automotive service excellence (ASE) certification and learn to work with high-voltage systems, batteries, and electric drivetrains through technical schools or manufacturer-specific training programs.

Job description

Diamond Foundry Inc. is solving the thermal limitation at the foundation of today's most exciting tech industries -- AI & cloud compute, electric-car power electronics, and 5G/6G wireless. We have managed to produce the world's first single-crystal diamond wafers and are now on a mission to put a diamond behind every chip. We are the rare unicorn that has grown fast and profitably. We received $515m in funding and are executing a multi-$B expansion plan for one of the greenest forms of tech manufacturing: converting greenhouse gas into diamond wafers using zero-emission energy.

We're looking for an ambitious Mechanical Engineer to take responsibility for designing capital equipment and facilities systems, working across multiple engineering disciplines. You'll be working with an experienced team of mechanical and electrical engineers to take a pragmatic approach to equipment and facility design. You'll be responsible for whole projects, pulling in the talents of others when needed.

This position will work out of our South San Francisco location.

Responsibilities
  • Designing, building, testing, and optimizing systems for high-volume capital equipment and high vacuum manufacturing equipment.

  • Prototyping and integration of new system functions to enhance existing equipment

  • Managing multiple domestic and international suppliers to construct parts and assemblies on time and within budget

  • Effective communication skills and ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders

Requirements
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with 15+ years of applicable engineering design experience for high-volume, low-cost manufacturing tools.

  • Experience in 2D and 3D CAD (specifically AutoCAD and SolidWorks), proficiency in PDM and/or PLM software and systems, experience with welded steel frames, sheet metal, machined parts, process piping design and related connections, and documentation for high-volume builds.

  • Experience with electrical and pipe routing design such as high purity gases, caustic and explosive gases, manual and automatic valves, and experience with their appropriate use. Experience with commercially available piping connection systems for high pressure and high vacuum, welding methods, and applicable safety considerations for these systems. Experience with mechanical automation, repetitive moving systems, material flow, robotics, precision alignment of large tools, and facilities design.

  • Strong analytical skills to investigate and provide solutions for problems across multiple systems within a facility

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment

$185,000 - $200,000 a year
The position is eligible for company shares. Actual compensation may be higher or lower in the range based on various factors, including, but not limited to a candidate's job duties, experience, and expertise. We will also consider higher level candidates and salary will be adjusted accordingly.
Diamond Foundry believes in supporting our employees from the workplace to their personal and home life. We provide eligible employees with an opportunity to enroll in a variety of benefit programs, generally including health insurance, flexible spending accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance programs, and a number of programs that provide for both paid and unpaid time away from work. Perks include employee discounts to VRAI. Our benefits begin as early as your first day of employment. Medical and vision coverage are retroactive to your start date, while dental and voluntary benefits take effect once you've completed your enrollment.
