Electric Assistant information

What is an electric assistant?

Electric Assistants are professionals who support electricians or electrical engineers in installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems and equipment. Their responsibilities often include preparing tools and materials, performing basic wiring tasks, assisting with troubleshooting, and ensuring safety protocols are followed on job sites. Electric Assistants may work in residential, commercial, or industrial settings, and their work helps ensure electrical systems operate safely and efficiently. This role is often an entry point for those seeking a career in the electrical trades.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electric assistant?

To thrive as an Electric Assistant, you need a basic understanding of electrical systems, safety protocols, and relevant technical training or certification, such as an apprenticeship or vocational course. Familiarity with tools like multimeters, wire strippers, and electrical schematics, as well as compliance with OSHA regulations, is typically required. Strong attention to detail, the ability to follow instructions, and good teamwork skills help individuals excel in supporting licensed electricians. These competencies ensure safe, efficient work and contribute to the smooth completion of electrical projects.

What are some common challenges electric assistants face when supporting electricians on job sites?

Electric Assistants often encounter challenges such as working in confined or elevated spaces, managing multiple tasks simultaneously, and adhering to strict safety protocols. They must be able to quickly adapt to changing job site conditions and effectively communicate with electricians and other team members to ensure projects run smoothly. Learning to read blueprints and handle various tools safely are also common hurdles, but these skills are developed with experience and on-the-job training.

What is the difference between Electric Assistant vs Electrician?

AspectElectric AssistantElectrician
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; on-the-job trainingHigh school diploma, apprenticeship, and licensing
Work EnvironmentAssist electricians on construction sites, maintenance, and repair projectsPerform electrical installations, repairs, and maintenance independently
Employer & Industry UsageConstruction companies, maintenance firms, industrial plantsElectrical contracting companies, industrial facilities, residential projects

Electric Assistants support electricians by performing basic tasks and preparing work sites, often requiring minimal certifications. Electricians, on the other hand, are licensed professionals responsible for complex electrical work. While Electric Assistants work under supervision, Electricians operate independently with advanced skills and certifications.

ICON Electric | Phoenix, AZ

Support the Construction of Tomorrow's Most Critical Facilities

ICON Electric is a leading electrical contractor specializing in complex commercial, industrial, and mission critical construction throughout the Southwest. As our data center portfolio continues to grow, we're looking for an experienced Assistant Superintendent to help lead field operations on some of the industry's most technically demanding projects.

Working alongside the Project Superintendent, you'll play a key role in coordinating field activities, supporting electrical crews, maintaining schedules, and ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to ICON's high standards of quality. This is an opportunity to continue growing your leadership career while contributing to projects that power the world's most advanced technology infrastructure.

If you're a proven electrical field leader who enjoys solving problems, mentoring others, and taking ownership of project success, we'd like to talk.

Position Summary

The Assistant Superintendent supports the Superintendent in managing daily field operations from mobilization through project completion. This individual helps coordinate manpower, materials, subcontractors, equipment, safety, quality, and production while serving as a trusted resource for field personnel and project leadership.

This role requires someone who leads by example, communicates effectively, remains organized under pressure, and isn't afraid to roll up their sleeves when the job demands it. Success comes from balancing day-to-day execution with proactive planning to keep projects moving safely and efficiently.

What You'll Do
  • Support the Superintendent in leading daily field operations on large commercial, industrial, and mission critical electrical construction projects.
  • Coordinate electricians, apprentices, subcontractors, and vendors to maintain productivity and project schedules.
  • Help plan daily and weekly work activities while monitoring manpower needs and production goals.
  • Review drawings, specifications, BIM models, and installation requirements to ensure quality execution.
  • Identify constructability challenges and work with project leadership to develop practical solutions.
  • Promote ICON Electric's safety-first culture by ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations, company policies, and jobsite safety standards.
  • Participate in daily huddles, toolbox talks, planning meetings, and coordination meetings with general contractors and other trades.
  • Assist with inspections, testing, commissioning, punch lists, and project turnover activities.
  • Coordinate material deliveries, equipment needs, and field logistics to minimize downtime.
  • Maintain accurate field documentation, daily reports, labor tracking, and as-built information.
  • Mentor electricians and apprentices while helping build a high-performing field team.
  • Step into leadership responsibilities as needed to support the Superintendent and ensure project success.
What You'll Bring
  • 7+ years of commercial or industrial electrical construction experience.
  • Previous experience as a Lead Electrician, Foreman, General Foreman, or Assistant Superintendent.
  • Experience supporting large commercial, industrial, manufacturing, semiconductor, or mission critical/data center projects is strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC), OSHA regulations, and electrical construction best practices.
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, one-line diagrams, and BIM models.
  • Experience with power distribution systems, switchgear, transformers, conduit systems, cable tray, and electrical equipment installation.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Experience using Procore, Bluebeam, Autodesk Build, BIM 360, or similar construction management software is preferred.
  • OSHA 30 certification is preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites as needed.
