What is elder abuse prevention?

Elder abuse prevention refers to the strategies, programs, and actions taken to protect older adults from physical, emotional, financial, or sexual harm, as well as neglect and exploitation. This work involves educating the public and professionals, identifying risk factors, providing support services, and advocating for stronger laws and policies to safeguard seniors. Elder abuse prevention specialists may work in social services, healthcare, or law enforcement to raise awareness and ensure the safety and well-being of older adults.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in elder abuse prevention, and why are they important?

To thrive in Elder Abuse Prevention, professionals need a background in social work, psychology, or gerontology, often supported by relevant degrees or certifications such as Certified Elder Abuse Specialist. Familiarity with case management systems, mandated reporting protocols, and legal compliance tools is essential.
