Shaped like oars, they were originally derived from boat paddles and adapted for self-defense by Okinawan fishermen. Practitioners use the eku to develop strength, coordination, and weapon techniques that simulate real combat scenarios. Eku training is recognized for its unique sweeping and striking motions, which differ from other martial arts weapons.
