From high-performance data centers driving the future of AI to dynamic commercial environments, your work will directly support technological advancement, sustainability, and human experience. We bring together mechanical, electrical, structural, and civil engineering experts to solve complex design challenges with precision, creativity, and collaboration. Whether you're optimizing energy efficiency, integrating resilient systems, or engineering the backbone of next-generation facilities, your contributions will help define the future of the built environment. This isn't just a job, it's a chance to lead innovation, engineer impact, and build a legacy of excellence.

HDR is looking for a Building Mechanical Design Coordinator/EIT candidate to join our Building Engineering Services Business Group in Washington.  This position includes engineering tasks with varying levels of complexity, which are assigned by a Mechanical Engineer or Project Manager. The Building Mechanical EIT may work independently on small tasks and may assist senior engineers on larger, more complex projects. The design projects this individual will support include a variety of market sectors: Technology, Corporate/Commercial, Education, Healthcare, Water/Wastewater, Municipal, Industrial, Power, and Federal.

As a Building Mechanical Design Coordinator/EIT, your responsibilities under the direction of a Mechanical Engineer will include:

  • Perform routine HVAC/mechanical and plumbing engineering assignments requiring application of standard techniques and procedures
  • Work independently on small HVAC/mechanical and plumbing design projects or assist more-senior engineers on larger HVAC/mechanical and plumbing design projects through the schematic design development and contract document phase of a project.
  • Coordinate workload to complete the documents on schedule.
  • Conduct analyses to develop design options or recommendations
  • Assist in the preparation of cost estimates and specifications.
  • Work with HVAC and plumbing vendors to select mechanical and plumbing equipment, systems, and devices.
  • Complete projects with clear, specified objectives and limited variables
  • Review mechanical and plumbing documents for areas of conflict with all disciplines.
  • Coordinate with and assist affected disciplines with addenda, RFIs, CPRs and change orders, and take responsibility to incorporate agreed-upon changes into the project documents.
  • Provide construction contract administration as needed.
  • Give direction to clerical and technical personnel as needed.
  • Perform other duties as needed

Preferred Qualifications

  • EIT certification strongly preferred. Candidates hired without their EIT will have the title of "Coordinator" and will be expected to obtain their EIT for career progression. Active participation in industry organizations is encouraged. Participation in professional development seminars, courses, workshops, or conferences is encouraged and should be approved in advance of attendance.
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience in sustainable design/LEED desired, but not required
  • Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm
  • Recent graduates will be considered
  • Proficiency in MS Office, AutoCAD, Revit, Trane Trace3D, or similar software
  • Project Management experience is a plus
  • Experience using IESVE Calculation Software
  • Construction administration experience is a plus
  • Preference given to local candidates
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, Trane TRACE or similar software, and equipment selection software)
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
