Ehs Director Remote information

What is an EHS director?

An EHS Director (Remote) is an executive responsible for overseeing environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs for an organization, while working remotely. This role involves developing and implementing policies to ensure regulatory compliance, employee safety, and environmental protection. The EHS Director collaborates with various departments, leads audits and inspections, and manages risk assessments, often across multiple locations. Working remotely, they utilize digital tools to communicate and monitor EHS performance and standards.

What are some common challenges faced by a remote EHS director, and how can they be effectively managed?

As a remote EHS Director, one of the key challenges is maintaining consistent safety and compliance standards across multiple sites without being physically present. Effective management often involves leveraging digital tools for real-time data collection, conducting virtual audits, and fostering strong communication channels with onsite EHS teams. Building a culture of accountability and regular training sessions helps ensure local teams are engaged and informed. Collaboration with cross-functional leaders is also crucial to address issues promptly and implement best practices across all locations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EHS director, and why are they important?

To thrive as an EHS Director (Remote), you need deep knowledge of environmental, health, and safety regulations, risk management, and compliance, typically supported by a relevant bachelor’s or master’s degree and substantial experience in EHS leadership. Familiarity with EHS management systems (such as ISO 14001/45001), incident reporting software, and certifications like CSP or CIH are highly valuable. Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills are essential for influencing organizational culture and driving remote teams towards EHS goals. These skills and qualifications ensure effective risk mitigation, regulatory compliance, and the creation of safe, sustainable work environments across distributed teams.

Job description

We are looking for a few good people who do not know what cannot be done. People who see opportunity where others see limits, are inspired by the chance to do something extraordinary and are ready to help build what has never been built before.
RH is a global luxury brand built on a belief that great design has the power to elevate the human experience. Through our ecosystem of Products, Places, Services and Spaces, we inspire customers to dream, design, dine, travel and live in a world thoughtfully curated by RH.
We are seeking an experienced Director of Safety to lead the development and execution of our global safety strategy across all RH locations. This leader will establish the standards, programs and practices that protect our Team Members, customers and business while ensuring compliance with applicable workplace safety, environmental and public health requirements.
The ideal candidate brings deep expertise across complex, multi-site and international operations, exercises strong judgment and urgency, and translates risk into practical, scalable programs that strengthen how RH operates.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Global Safety Strategy & Leadership

  • Live and model Our Vision, Values and Beliefs every day.
  • Own and lead RH's global safety strategy, programs and operating standards across all locations and businesses.
  • Establish RH's enterprise safety roadmap, priorities and investment recommendations based on risk, business needs and regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as RH's subject matter expert on workplace safety, including OSHA and Cal/OSHA requirements, and partner with local experts and counsel to navigate international regulations.
  • Advise executive and business leaders on material safety risks, regulatory developments and emerging issues, providing clear recommendations and paths to action.
  • Establish and continuously improve global safety policies, procedures and controls that create consistent standards and support regulatory compliance.
  • Lead safety strategy and compliance readiness across international markets and new locations, including pre-opening risk assessments and programs adapted to local requirements and operating environments.
Safety Culture & Education
  • Build a proactive safety culture by embedding clear expectations, shared accountability and Team Member engagement into daily operations.
  • Establish scalable safety education and training tailored to operational risks, regulatory requirements and job-specific responsibilities.
  • Strengthen safety expertise, consistency and accountability among leaders and partners across the organization.
Risk, Compliance & Prevention
  • Lead enterprise risk assessments across operations, facilities, equipment and projects, translating findings into prioritized prevention and mitigation strategies.
  • Oversee safety audits, regulatory compliance, recordkeeping and reporting across all applicable jurisdictions.
  • Lead industrial hygiene programs, including exposure assessments, hazard evaluation, monitoring and controls for chemical, physical and biological hazards.
  • Lead RH's response to significant safety incidents, including timely escalation, executive communication, root-cause analysis and corrective action.
  • Establish enterprise safety metrics and reporting that provide leaders with visibility into risk, compliance, trends and program effectiveness.
  • Partner with the People Team, Legal and operational leaders on occupational injuries and claims, using insights to strengthen prevention and support effective resolution.
  • Oversee environmental compliance programs, including air quality, stormwater, hazardous materials, waste management, permitting and reporting obligations.
  • Serve as RH's primary Safety partner during regulatory inspections, external audits and agency interactions.
Operational, Construction & Food Safety
  • Partner across Galleries, Distribution, Home Delivery, Hospitality and other operational teams to identify business-specific risks and implement practical, scalable solutions.
  • Establish and enforce construction and job-site safety standards, partnering with project leaders, superintendents and contractors on hazard analyses, orientations, inspections and subcontractor compliance.
  • Own RH's enterprise food safety framework in partnership with the Hospitality Leadership Team, establishing standards and controls that protect Team Members and guests, ensure compliance with sanitation and public health requirements, and support consistent execution across RH Hospitality.
WHAT YOU BRING
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in occupational safety, environmental health and safety, or related risk management, including ownership of an enterprise safety function.
  • Experience leading safety across complex, multi-site and international operations, including new-market or location openings.
  • Deep knowledge of OSHA and Cal/OSHA requirements, with experience navigating international frameworks such as EU-OSHA, CCOHS and HSE.
  • Experience across retail, hospitality, manufacturing, distribution, construction or home delivery preferred.
  • Experience leading food safety, sanitation and public health programs within hospitality or food-service operations.
  • Expertise in incident investigation, root-cause analysis, emergency response and industrial hygiene, including exposure assessment and appropriate controls.
  • Knowledge of environmental compliance, including air quality, stormwater, hazardous materials, waste management and permitting requirements such as NPDES, RCRA and Title V.
  • Familiarity with ISO 14001, ISO 45001 or comparable safety and environmental management systems preferred.
  • CSP, CIH, CHMM or comparable professional certification preferred.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
  • Safety is embedded in how RH operates, with leaders and Team Members demonstrating shared ownership and accountability.
  • RH has clear, scalable global safety standards that are consistently executed and appropriately adapted to local requirements.
  • Leaders have meaningful visibility into risks and trends, enabling timely decisions and informed investments.
  • Incidents and recurring risks are reduced through disciplined assessment, investigation, corrective action and prevention.
  • Each RH business has effective safety practices tailored to its operations and connected to RH's enterprise strategy.
  • RH Hospitality consistently executes strong food safety, sanitation and public health standards through clear accountability and partnership between Safety and Hospitality Leadership.
