ADVERTISING TITLE: Special Education Teacher
This open competitive advertisement is for a Career Service position located at Suwannee CI in the Education department.
The purpose of the Bureau of Education at the Florida Department of Corrections is to provide comprehensive educational programs and services for inmates. Their goal is to enhance inmates' academic, vocational, and life skills, thereby promoting personal development and successful reintegration into society. By offering quality education and training, they aim to reduce recidivism and support inmates in becoming productive, law-abiding citizens.
This position is not a teleworking position and is required to report to the FDC office in the area it serves.
JOB DUTIES:
  • Make a transformative impact by providing special education services and teaching academic subjects to students with disabilities in a correctional facility, helping them unlock their full potential.
  • Be a champion for individualized learning by developing, implementing, and monitoring Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students with disabilities, conducting IEP meetings, and maintaining meticulous documentation.
  • Guide students towards a brighter future by conducting transition planning, making referrals, and coordinating with institutional staff and external agencies to ensure seamless support.
  • Deliver specialized instruction, assist teachers with accommodations and modifications, and closely monitor student progress to ensure every student thrives.

Salary Incentives:

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college/university; and
  • Possess or be eligible to apply for a Temporary Florida Department of Corrections Educator's Certificate or if applicable a temporary State of Florida Educator's Certificate.
    • SPECIAL NOTE: Successful applicants will be issued a Florida Department of Corrections CTE Temporary Educator's Certificate. Applicants will have 5 years to obtain the Department of Corrections Educator's Professional Certificate. A Department of Corrections Educator's Professional Certificate must be obtained prior to the expiration of the Temporary Certificate.
    • SPECIAL NOTE: This position requires that you pass the Exceptional Student Education (K12) Subject Area Exam with 12 months of hire.

BACKGROUND SCREENING REQUIREMENT
The Florida Department of Corrections requires all job applicants and volunteers to pass a Level 2 background check as per Chapter 435, Florida Statutes. This check must be completed before they can start working or volunteering.
