Industry UsagePrecision manufacturing, mold making, aerospaceGeneral manufacturing, automotive, aerospace
Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

Both Edm Machine operators and CNC Machinists work in manufacturing environments requiring technical skills. Edm Machine operators focus on electrical discharge machining for precision parts, while CNC Machinists operate computer-controlled machines for diverse manufacturing tasks. Understanding their differences helps job seekers find the right career path in manufacturing industries.

What is an EDM machine?

An EDM machine, or Electrical Discharge Machining machine, is a specialized tool used to shape hard metals and conductors by using electrical sparks to erode material. It is commonly used for creating precise and complex parts that are difficult to machine with traditional methods. EDM machines are especially useful in industries like aerospace, automotive, and tool and die making. The process does not require physical contact between the tool and workpiece, which helps achieve fine finishes and intricate details.

What are some common challenges faced by EDM Machine Operators, and how can they be overcome?

EDM Machine Operators often face challenges such as maintaining precision during extended production runs, troubleshooting machine errors, and working with complex or delicate materials. To overcome these challenges, operators must stay attentive to detail, perform regular calibration and maintenance on machines, and communicate closely with engineers and quality control teams. Continuous learning about new EDM technologies and techniques also helps operators adapt to evolving manufacturing requirements and improve process efficiency.

About the role
The Tool & Die Machinist is responsible for the fabrication, repair, and continuous improvement of metal working dies, tooling, jigs, fixtures, and gauges that support high-volume manufacturing operations. This role requires strong machining fundamentals, blueprint interpretation, and hands-on problem-solving skills in a fast-paced industrial environment.
This position plays a critical role in maintaining uptime, quality, and safety across press and tooling operations.
What you'll do
  • Interpret blueprints, sketches, CAD prints, and verbal instructions to determine machining methods and material requirements.
  • Layout, measure, mark, and scribe metal stock for machining operations.
  • Set up and operate manual machine tools including lathes, milling machines, and grinders.
  • Inspect machined components using precision measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, pin gauges, etc.) to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Assemble, fit, and troubleshooting tooling assemblies to ensure proper mechanical function.
  • Test and validate dies for fit, alignment, and performance prior to release.
  • Perform heat-treating operations and verify hardness as required.
  • Support press floor troubleshooting and assist with die and press maintenance as needed.
  • Recommend design or process improvements based on tool wear, failure analysis, and production feedback.
  • Safely operate material handling equipment (including die buggies) to load/unload tooling.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe toolroom environment.
  • Collaborate with toolroom leadership, maintenance, and production teams.

Perform additional duties as assigned by the Toolroom Lead or Supervisor.
Qualifications
  • Associate degree in Machine Tool Technology, Machining, Tool & Die, or equivalent technical training.
  • Demonstrated experience repairing and machining metal working dies and tooling.
  • Strong blueprint reading and GD&T fundamentals.
  • Proficiency using precision measurement tools.
  • Solid math skills including fractions, decimals, ratios, and tolerances.
  • Ability to diagnose and solve tooling problems with limited standardization.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Willingness to work assigned shifts, including overtime as required.

Preferred, but not required:
  • CNC milling experience
  • Wire EDM experience
