Industrial Maintenance Technician (CNC & Automation)

Pay rate is negotiable based on experience

Atlas Seals is looking for a mechanically inclined, hands-on Industrial Maintenance Technician to support our manufacturing facility, CNC machine tools, and custom-built automated production equipment.

This is not strictly a facilities maintenance position. Your work will include preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and equipment improvements, along with general building and facility maintenance. Our equipment includes CNC lathes, CNC mills, Wire EDMs, commercially manufactured industrial equipment, and custom-built machines and automation systems.

We welcome candidates at different experience levels who meet the core qualifications below. Demonstrated hands-on ability and problem-solving skills matter more to us than formal education.

Advanced PLC, controls, and automation troubleshooting experience is preferred, not required for candidates who meet the core qualifications. Candidates with these advanced skills will be considered for a significantly higher compensation range.

What You’ll Do- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on CNC lathes, CNC mills, Wire EDMs, and other manufacturing equipment.

  • Diagnose and repair mechanical problems on production equipment, including unfamiliar or custom-built machinery and automation systems.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot pneumatic cylinders, solenoid valves, sensors, proximity switches, motors, bearings, gearboxes, pumps, actuators, relays, contactors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and related components.
  • Perform industrial electrical troubleshooting and safely distinguish between electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and controls-related problems.
  • Work with 24 VDC control systems and 480 VAC three-phase industrial equipment.
  • Read mechanical drawings, equipment manuals, electrical schematics, and pneumatic diagrams.
  • Use diagnostic and measurement equipment, including multimeters and mechanical measuring tools.
  • Assist with equipment installation, modifications, upgrades, and continuous-improvement projects.
  • Maintain preventive maintenance schedules and document maintenance and repair activities.
  • Perform general building and facility maintenance as needed.
  • Work directly with manufacturing and engineering personnel to identify recurring equipment problems and improve machine reliability.
  • Follow machine safety and Lockout/Tagout procedures.

Required Qualifications

We’re looking for a mechanically talented problem solver with:- Industrial maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment.

  • Experience performing preventive maintenance on CNC machine tools. CNC lathe and mill experience is preferred; Wire EDM maintenance experience is a plus.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to troubleshoot unfamiliar equipment.
  • Working knowledge of pneumatics, basic hydraulics, motors, bearings, sensors, switches, valves, actuators, and other common industrial components.
  • Industrial electrical troubleshooting skills and familiarity with common electrical control components.
  • The ability to safely work around industrial 24 VDC controls and 480 VAC three-phase equipment.
  • The ability to read mechanical drawings, equipment documentation, electrical schematics, and pneumatic diagrams.
  • The ability to use common diagnostic equipment and systematically identify the root cause of equipment failures rather than simply replacing parts.
  • Strong computer skills beyond basic Microsoft Word or Excel use. You must be comfortable navigating software, working with computerized equipment, researching technical information, connecting to equipment, and learning unfamiliar programs and interfaces.
  • The ability to work independently and take ownership of equipment problems through resolution.

Preferred: Advanced Automation & Controls Experience

Candidates with strong industrial controls and automation troubleshooting experience bring additional value and qualify for a higher compensation range.

Several of our custom-built production machines use Allen-Bradley/Rockwell controls and a mix of legacy and newer automation technology. We’re not necessarily looking for a controls engineer who designs and programs systems from scratch. We especially value someone who can connect to an existing machine control system, understand what the machine is trying to do, and use software and diagnostic tools to determine why it isn’t doing it.

Highly desirable experience includes:

  • Allen-Bradley SLC-series PLCs and RSLogix 500.
  • Allen-Bradley ControlLogix PLCs and RSLogix 5000 / Studio 5000.
  • Going online with a PLC and monitoring live ladder logic, inputs, outputs, interlocks, timers, alarms, and machine sequences to diagnose faults.
  • Rockwell PanelView and HMI systems, including legacy visualization systems such as RSView.
  • DeviceNet industrial networks and associated diagnostic tools.
  • Allen-Bradley servo drives, motion-control systems, and older or legacy servo equipment.
  • Industrial 24 VDC control systems and 480 VAC three-phase electrical troubleshooting.
  • PNP/NPN sensors, discrete I/O troubleshooting, and analog instrumentation using 0–10 VDC and 4–20 mA signals.
  • Troubleshooting field I/O and connected devices, including sensors, solenoids, relays, contactors, motors, drives, actuators, and safety devices.
  • Reading electrical schematics and tracing signals through an industrial control system.
  • Troubleshooting custom-built automated machinery where a manufacturer’s service technician may not be available.
  • Maintaining and troubleshooting legacy automation equipment and software.

Familiarity with Microsoft Visual Studio,VB.NET

, VB6, or other PC-based machine-control/HMI applications is a significant plus.
